vital source

I have a couple of textbooks that came with my course. We are using vital source, which is, well, pretty awful as a reader.

So, can I move my texts over to calibre? If so, how?

Thank you.

Use "add book" to import them into calibre. Edit metadata and convert if/as needed. Then "send to device" to send them to your Nook.

What format are these books in? Are they DRM protected (Calibre cannot view or convert DRM protected books)?

I am not sure of the format - is there a way to tell?

Thank you -

Other than seeing if you can save a book locally outside the VitalSource Bookshelf I have no idea. I had a quick look at the VitalSource web site and it was not obvious what formats are used. It may be a proprietary format that cannot be handled by Calibre.
