InkPad 3 sticky plastic
Hi everyone!
The plastic of my Inkpad 3 gradually became very sticky. I've always kept it in the original faux leather cover and never cleaned it with aggressive cleaners. It is so sticky, that when trying to clean it with microfiber cloth or kitchen paper, it is left covered with strands. Anyone got tips dealing with that mess, which frequently happens with "rubberized" plastic like as the Inkpad 3? |

I had the same issue on my Touch HD, within the space of the first two or three years. Interestingly that happened only on the front frame, and not on the back. I suspected it may have something to do with a reaction with skin grease or sweat. I simply removed the gum coating gently with acetone, leaving the clean hard plastic behind it, and that was it. I would recommend care not to spill solvent on the screen itself, though it may be even resistant to diluted acetone. On my reader the plastic base is black as the coating, and the substrate is flat, so the aesthetics was not a bit affected by the wipeout.

Try cleaning it with windows-cleaning solution, I cleaned mine with it.

Thank you, for me it started happened on the third year as well. I don't think it is caused by sweat, i always hold it on the left side and both are sticky (and only on the front). Probably the rubberized plastic degrades with time, I've seen it on other products using similar "soft-touch" plastic.
Already tried window cleaning solution (with alcohol) - it gets worse. Using acetone to dissolve it is a great idea, but the color is brown and probably the base is black. I guess i'm stuck with that stickiness. My next ereader will be hard plastic or metal. |

However, you think using acetone, which etches plastic, is a good idea and in my opinion it will only make the situation worse (it will etch the plastic layer of the body) |

That's mine, front (I could have polished it more) and back (untouched, slightly worn by use, but not at all sticky). No acetone etching, maybe because used diluted acetone. As said, acceptable because black on black. Were there originally decals on the buttons? never mind, better than the sticky mess.

An alternate solution to rubbery plastic going sticky is rub it with talcum powder. Generic unperfumed is best.
Acetone or other solvents is risky and doesn't always work. Talc works. |
