Kindle Store Science Fiction Scorecard
Attached is a PDF containing all Hugo and Nebula award winners. Each book that can be found in the Kindle Store has the store link provided. The score is the % of these books that can be purchased through the Kindle storefront (ie: If all books were found, the score would be 100%).
Note that there are several famous SF books such as Lord Valentine's Castle, etc. that are available from the kindle store but were only nominated for an award. I only count award winners just to keep the list reasonable but may in the future add nominations because these are some great books as well. I'll update this periodically. Score as of 4/05/2008: 35% Score as of 3/09/2008: 33% Score as of 2/09/2008: 26% Happy reading -d Last edited by dugbug; 04-08-2008 at 08:32 AM. |

Mirror Dance by Lois McMaster Bujold is available without DRM from Baen webscription. So are many other titles by this author.
A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge and Spin by Robert Charles Wilson are Tor books that used to be available DRM-free from Baen webscription (and perhaps will be again). |

Also, you can download the most recent winner "Rainbows End" directly here:
http://vrinimi.org/rainbowsend.html I had to conver it to word 97 before it looked good on the kindle. I'm going to attach a word doc to this thread that is readable on the kindle with hot-links. Does anybody know how to create a web link directly to the kindle store? The links I provide are to the amazon.com kindle store area (which kicks the kindle into web-browsing mode, making it a bit cumbersome) -d |

your Kindle links in the PDF work fine, but all the check links do not work. Any chance this might be fixed?

Try it again. The PDF link doesn't work for some reason because the "check" link is actually a HYPERLINK formula. Guess that confuses the converter.
Since I can't upload XLS files to the web site, but I can upload ZIP files, I ZIPPED the original XLS. -d |

Updated score for April (At 35%).
We seem to be seeing a 2-books-per-month addition. The big notable this month is the addition of 2006 hugo winner "Spin" by Robert C. Wilson. I am thinking of moving to an access database and track nominations as well. Possibly add the philip k dick awards. -d |

I really like this, dugbug. For SciFi readers (and there seem to be a lot of them here) who are considering buying a Kindle and are wondering if they'll be able to buy the titles they're interested in, this is likely to be much more useful than a simple tally of the total number of SF titles that Amazon sells. You've done a very nice job.

Thanks vivaldirules
Im redoing the database. I have now over 500 books, the most prestigious SF and Fantasy works of the genres. Haven't worked on the kindle storefront side of it yet, but I've written some excel macros to score the works for fun. A book gets one point for each time it's nominated, and an extra point for each award it wins (if any). An author score was computed which is essentially the sum of all of the author's book scores. Here are the top 10 authors and their book scores (higher is better). Lois McMaster Bujold 20 Robert A. Heinlein 20 Robert Silverberg 19 Gene Wolfe 14 Orson Scott Card 14 David Brin 13 Ursula K. Le Guin 13 Isaac Asimov 12 Joe Haldeman 12 Poul Anderson 12 Here are the most nominated books. American Gods, Neil Gaiman Doomsday Book, Connie Willis Dreamsnake, Vonda McIntyre Dune, Frank Herbert Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card Forever Peace, Joe Haldeman Gateway, Frederik Pohl Neuromancer, William Gibson Paladin of Souls, Lois McMaster Bujold Rendezvous with Rama, Arthur C. Clarke Ringworld , Larry Niven Speaker for the Dead, Orson Scott Card Startide Rising, David Brin The Dispossessed, Ursula K. Le Guin The Forever War, Joe Haldeman The Fountains of Paradise, Arthur C. Clarke The Gods Themselves, Isaac Asimov The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula K. Le Guin The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Robert A. Heinlein This database is very large, so Ill have to create some automation to check the kindle store. -d |
