Don't use AIM anymore if you care for your privacy

Found the following on this site:

AOL has some new "Terms of Service" for those who use their AOL Instant Messaging servers, and it's pretty crazy:
Quote:
Although you or the owner of the Content retain ownership of all right, title and interest in Content that you post to any AIM Product, AOL owns all right, title and interest in any compilation, collective work or other derivative work created by AOL using or incorporating this Content. In addition, by posting Content on an AIM Product, you grant AOL, its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, assigns, agents and licensees the irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide right to reproduce, display, perform, distribute, adapt and promote this Content in any medium. You waive any right to privacy. You waive any right to inspect or approve uses of the Content or to be compensated for any such uses.
Simply wonderful. I am glad that there are other services beside AIM.

Yea, that's totally UFB. I'll bet it won't last. This reminds me of that whole privacy deal with Yahoo and the little "check box" page a few years ago... or the Google phone directory.

AIM, Orkut, Google Groups, GMail, Yahoo Groups... the list goes on. When you're using someone else's services, you're kidnapped by whatever policies they decide to levy. These are probably the worse offenders.

But... there's always the Gaim Encryption plugin, which I've been happily using for a year or two now.

You could also always choose to use Jabber, and their gateway to the other IM services, if you wanted to wean yourself off of AIM directly.

According to boingboing, AOL has changed their terms of service to correct this.
