eBook reader as e-ink monitor for computer

Back in 2006, arivero posted, "Now you can improvise a cradle next to your normal monitor and use the iLiad as an auxiliary E-Ink monitor!":

Now in early 2010, I'm wondering what the best device/setup is for using an eBook reader as a second monitor for a computer running Linux (or any other major OS)? I'd actually prefer simply an e-ink computer screen with VGA / DVI / any video input, but that does not appear to exist yet.

I do not know of any such thing. One problem would be the refresh rate is so slow on eInk displays that it would be useless for anything but... well , reading. And of course there is no back lighting... so you would have to have a lamp aimed on it at the correct angle to see it. All in all not a good choice for a computer monitor.

Thanks to NiLuJe and hawhill, the Kindle DX makes a great second monitor. Video of it in action | Step-by-step guide.
