They Shoot Horses, Don't They?

I just noticed that Horace McCoy's They Shoot Horses, Don't They? is now available for Kindle, for $4.99. Seems to be exclusively at Amazon, but I converted to epub with Calibre, and it looks nicely formatted, at least at first glance.

Amazon has a few other McCoy titles for sale, but those are free at Munseys.

Thanks for that, Catlady. I've got They Shoot Horses, Don't They? in a collection called American Noir of the 1930s and 40s, published by the Library of America. I hadn't heard of McCoy before I read it. I wonder if any of his other stories are worth reading?

It's the only one I've read by Horace McCoy--inspired by having seen the movie.

Thanks for posting that, Catlady. I haven't read it and only vaguely remember the movie but the book looks interesting.

I found this description of one of his stories at Munseys that is not at Amazon, Trapped in Silver, and in the process, this interesting website, Pulp Serenade.

Quote:
the somewhat mysterious first-person narrator, whose identity is never fully explained. It appears that he is a screenwriter, or filmmaker of some type, who is accompanying Police Sergeant Donovan as he investigates the seemingly natural death of a millionaire doctor. But as he begins to question those closest to the deceased, Donovan begins to suspect that there may be more than meets the eye.

The movie is terrific.

Thanks--I think--for leading me to another site with info about pulps, which resulted in my adding another 50 or so stories to my e-reader ...
