Date tag question

I was validating an epub and the epub had a weird date coded within the opf I have not seen before.

Code:
<dc:date xsi:type="dcterms:W3CDTF">2012-10</dc:date>
If I remove the xsi:type="dcterms:W3CDTF the line will validate but Im having trouble finding exactly what does that mean. Can anyone share light on this?

DC stands for Dublin Core. See our wiki. W3CDTF is the http://www.w3.org/TR/NOTE-datetime standard for W3C date and time format. Also in our wiki.
