looking for help - Calibre took over my documents -

Hello, this is me, Christoph from Germany, posing a problem without a great background in Calibre: I downloaded Calibre 64 bit 6.25.0 on September 3rd, 2023 (system: Windows 10 Home). Positive effect: a decent e-book library. But I found that all my .docx documents had been converted into epub documents and PDF files could no longer be opened at all. I uninstalled Caliber (but only “normally” via the Windows System). Now the PDF files can be opened again without any problems, but for .docx files, opening under “C:\Program Files\calibre2\calibre.exe” “%1” is still automatically recommended, but at least the alternative Libre Office Writer is also recommended, which continues to work. Did I do something wrong when downloading? (I’d like to download Calibre again)
Thank you in advance. Chris.

Welcome to MobileRead!

Yes, you probably did something wrong. At some point, you were probably asked if you wanted Calibre to be the default app for your files and you clicked yes. That can be fixed in the Windows settings by selecting different defaults for specific file types. After you've done that, it should be ok to install Calibre again. But next time watch out for what you agree with, no matter if it's Calibre asking or the Windows system itself. Don't just automatically click yes to everything.

Hi Sirtel,
thank you for welcoming me to MobileRead and for your prompt answer to my question. I did as you advised me (checked the settings and selected the right default for my .docx documents. First problem solved! Then I found out that, although I had uninstalled calibre in the Windows System, it was still sitting in the download file. Since you cave me the courage to do so, I just installed it again. After step one (agree to the rules) I was asked in step two, if I would allow the program to make changes in my system. I answered “no” – but that meant, I could not install calibre. When I clicked “yes”, calibre was installed without any more question asked. Calibre now works fine and so far it didn’t interfere with any of the other software. So I don’t know what happened the first time but still - the problem was fixed with your help!
I would like to show you my appreciation – do you read mysteries once in a while? Because I write them! (hospital-based mysteries which are published in German) Eight cases have been published so far, four of which have been translated into English and were published by Amazon Crossing. You can google me: Christoph Spielberg. If you are interested in sending you one of my crime novels, just mail to: christoph.spielberg@t-online.de
Enjoy the weekend!

Thank you for your offer, and I'm glad all went well with your Calibre install.

Yes, I read mysteries, and I looked you up on Amazon - your dr. Hoffmann series looks interesting. But I think I'm going to just buy the first book. Many thanks for your kind offer, though.
