The PalmDOC compressed files took (c1) 12 seconds, uncompressed (c0) 8 seconds and huffdic (c2) 8 minutes. Attached are excerpts from the log files. Original was a 2.5MB epub file, with 5.1MB in HTML files (~860,000 word count) and 824KB in JPEG. Spoiler:

Old devices that only know about old MOBI can read dual MOBIs and apparently don't even know that it's a dual MOBI; it looks like a regular old MOBI7 to them. But I'm guessing that the newer devices that use AZW3 know about dual MOBIs and know how to skip/avoid the old MOBI7 stuff.

For manga, comic and audible and I never delete anything so more is less for me, at least storage-wise I guess

From what I've seen of filesizes reported by newer kindle firmwares, it seems DuckieTigger is right, at least for kindles that support KF8

32gb makes the Kindle future proof. My library might just fit on an 8gb Kindle, but I want flexibility, and just never to have to worry about storage.

It was not much more expensive, and if my entreaties to Amazon are answered, they will add TTS and ability to add more voice data (including other languages) as well as some form of immersion reading such that I’d want the storage for audiobooks. |

As others have stated already, audiobooks and manga are the likely culprit. I use my phone and iPad for those so my Kindle is strictly for reading.
I was tempted to get the 32 GB version for future proofing but realized that was overkill because there's no way I would ever store that many books on it. An 8GB device can hold over 6000 average sized books. I can't even imagine storing 600 books on my Kindle. With E-Ink's slow refresh rate, it would be annoyingly slow to flip through so many titles to find one. |

I like to store as many books as possible on my ereaders, because generally I have no idea what I'll be reading next (it's subject to change at any moment). Usually I read several different books at once. So I want to have a big selection available. |

Fair enough. But assuming you're storing only books on it, would you ever have enough books on it to max out the 8GB limit let alone 32GB?

8GB will store 3000+ typical books. a kindle will take up to a week, plugged into a wall, to index them all. and if it chokes on just one you will have endless fun finding out which one upset it. Books with lots of full colour pictures - like cookery books - will take up more space per book, but a simple test is How much space does your entire Calibre Library take up right now be aware also that Amazon has no download all option if you have , say 5,000 books bought from amazon and stored in their cloud - you can't say send them all to my new kindle please. you have to laboriously select individual books and say send to ... My 8GB Oasis 2 is almost maxed out, and that is not even a fifth of my whole ebook library.
That said, I don't plan to keep my whole library on an ereader. Only the books I might conceivably want to read in the near future. I have about 3000 books on my 32GB Oasis 3 right now, transferred in batches, all indexed. I don't download directly from Amazon, even the books purchased from them, because I want to edit formatting and use custom font sizes, and those don't work with direct downloads. |
