These are the adventures of Dickson McCunn, the retired Glasgow provision merchant with the soul of a romantic, and the Gorbals Die-hards, his adopted 'family'of tough but resourceful young lads.
These are not quite the usual Buchan super-heroes as found in most of his other 'shockers'. True the novels have plots featuring heroes and villains and much derring-do, but they are really comedies, featuring much gentle irony and affectionate humour at the expense of the Scottish bourgeoisie among whom Buchan grew up.
The three novels in this omnibus edition are:
Huntingtower (1922) in which McCunn and friends foil a plot to capture a Russian princess.
Castle Gay (1930) in which McCunn and friends frustrate the enemies of the Evallonian throne.
The House of the Four Winds (1935) in which McCunn and friends restore the rightful monarchy to the throne of Evallonia.
Like his other shockers, the plots are all fairly flimsy, and don't stand up to really critical analysis, but the prose is so vigorous, the characters so believable, and the pace so gripping, that it hardly seems to matter.
