Rooting the Nova 3 Color: is it locked?

Hi all,

I recently purchased a Nova 3 Color from onyxboox.com. I noticed that there are actually two storefronts to Onyx Boox and that, perhaps I made the wrong choice of the two options.

I'm trying to root my device now, following steps at https://blog.tho.ms/hacks/2021/03/27...-note-air.html which roughly align to the Max 3 Rooted thread (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=323254), modulo TWRP.

It appears to me that my device is locked. `fastboot flashing get_unlock_ability` returns:

(bootloader) get_unlock_ability: 0

Has anyone else noticed this? Using fastboot to run any unlocking / flashing / booting results in an uninterruptible hang, which I can't seem to debug from the usual googling. Is this, perhaps, one of the modifications from the onyxboox.com retailer?

I dunno. I've gotten get_unlock_ability 0 on unlocked devices.
Have you tried actually flashing?

Yes, the process just "hung" and I wasn't able to kill it.

I tried doing the same thing on a friend's computer and everything worked perfectly -- so this is possibly a bad install or misconfiguration of fastboot on my part.

Funnily enough, I also noticed that if you go to the bootloader, fastboot will tell you the device is unlocked, but not if you have rebooted to fastboot.

Device is now rooted! Thank you!

Where did you download the firmware of Nova 3 color? https://onyxboox.com/firmware
Says : ONYX BOOX Nova 3 Color (no updates)
And www.boox.com jumps to zh.boox.com which has no firmware for download. Would you share a download link for the firmware of nova 3 color here. Thanks

Inside, you will find a link to the latest available .upx file (under "DownloadURLlist").

However, AFAIK Nova3Color came with the most recent Onyx Boox firmware (3.1?) stock, and there were no further updates.

Unless there is an intermediate OTA update available from the device.
