A question to our copyright experts: Since Whitman's novel was first published (in serialized form) in 1852, it is in the public domain, isn't it?

It's certainly in the public domain in the US. Since Whitman died in 1892, and it was published during his lifetime, it's also in the public domain anywhere that copyright is less than life+124.

The online pdf is a faithful transcription of the magazine release, which even keeps the original mistakes (hooray!), so I think it’s in the public domain everywhere. I’ve thought about uploading it here myself, but perhaps someone else is faster.
