Hi,
First, thank you all for the information posted here. Because of that I could jailbreak my new Kindle PaperWhite3 without a problem. I just received PW3 White color with Firmware 5.8.11 and SN: G090 KB...) and I downgraded with success to firmware 5.8.9.0.1 (update_pw3_factory_5.8.9.0.1). If you want to do the jailbreak you do it on your own: it worked for me, might not work for you. A lottery, I guess. It was easy and my steps were: - started my new Kindle PW3 - turned on Wi-FI and then logged into my Kindle (Amazon) account. It identified this Kindle as my second (I have another KT4) - immediately after (1 ... 2 minutes, no more) I turned OFF the WiFi via the Airplane option. - I did a reset the device from the Option in Settings - it rebooted - After restart I did not turned on the WiFi, I choose the option on the bottom to continue setup later. - I connected Kindle to PC and created in the root of the USB storage (alongside the Documents folder) a folder named update.bin.tmp.partial to make sure no update will happen (read a lot here, on the site about not being able to downgrade if going to a firmare >= 5.8; even 5.8.11 jailbreaking is not officially supported, it's the reason I write here). - I charged the Kindle PW3 until the Power LED was green, fully charged. - I copied the following file update_pw3_factory_5.8.9.0.1.bin in the root folder of Kindle: https://nofile.io/f/ADNqZUHA7J2/upda..._5.8.9.0.1.bin - I've disconnected Kindle for mPC (always with Safely Remove Hardware and Eject icon from SYsTray - Windows 10 x64) - I clicked the Update your Kindle option from Settings the device rebooted and after some time got this on the screen: - I had to wait about 14 minutes, after that wait-time the device rebooted into the normal home screen; it flickered a few times in the process. - Now, with the factory image of 5.8.9.0.1 installed I have those details: - turned to the wiki page from here as reference and source of links with the links for software to actually do the jailbreak: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/5_x_Jailbreak and followed the next steps: - used the file attached in this post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=275887 and followed the instructions in the first post. After the reboot I had a new document on Home Screen saying that the device is jailbroken. - after that I used this file: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/at...9&d=1533526589 from the post here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...postcount=1597 Here I am at this moment. I will have to install whatever is needed to have back my CoolReader. I use this wonderful app on my Kindle Touch and this is the reason why I have jailbreaked my new Kindle PW3. And then get back to 5.8.11 firmware found here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/firmwaredow...ite_5.8.11.bin I hope it helps someone LE: used the advice from here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...25&postcount=5 on how to install Kual, Kual-Helper and MRinstaller that I've downloaded from here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=225030 LLE: Installed CoolReader from here: http://forum.vlasovsoft.net/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=631 with instructions from here: http://wiki.vlasovsoft.net/doku.php?id=en:installation Last edited by NiLuJe; 08-23-2018 at 01:21 PM. Good step by step explanation how jailbreaking works.
An addendum: a) There's an important difference between "out of the box" firmwares (brand-new devices) and (OTA/sideload update) user firmwares. Only the latter may not be jailbroken if > 5.8.7. As it looks now, nearly all OOTB fw versions may be jailbroken - including some (or even all?) 5.9.x variants. b) There's no need to register a still selling "legacy" Kindle of 7th and 8th generation (PW3, KT3, KOA1, ...) - just keep WiFi off (airplane mode) and connect it via USB to a computer. If you can access it as external storage, just create the OTA blocking directory and try the downgrade to the factory test fw. Your method (registering it, then switch off WiFi immediately to avoid the very aggressive auto update) is only needed for 9th generation Kindles (namely KOA2) where without registering it first, it's not even possible to access its storage via USB, which is a necessary prerequisite for the jailbreak. |

@mars01,
First off let me admit I know absolutely nothing about Kindles, however, your second image is displaying your full serial number. People are generally advised here not to do this. Perhaps you need to edit the image and reattach. I don't know whether MAC addresses are similarly advised to be kept private. |

@jackie_w: Thanks, I'd only caught the plaintext one in the body of the post .
(Also, before you get mobbed by a green mod, guidelines for inline images state 600x600 as the maximum allowed dimensions, so I thumbnailed 'em too ). Last edited by NiLuJe; 08-23-2018 at 01:22 PM. |

Thank you @jackie_w and @NiLuJe!
I didn't thought much about SN's and the rest, I just hoped it will help others facing the choice of jailbraking or not. Thanks for doing the work for me and resizing the images |

@mars01 You should be able to upgrade to the latest firmware, 5.8.11 was suggested in the old posts because later versions were not able to work with KUAL at the time, that is now not true anymore.

But it's still true that you'll lose the ability of using Kindlets (active document files *.azw2) with 7th and 8th generation Kindles (like PW3, KV, KT3) as an alternative to start apps via KUAL after upgrading to any fw 5.9.x.
And I like it very much to start my favorite eReader software Vlasovsoft's Cool Reader directly from the library (to be more precise: from a local collection named "Kindle Tools") instead of first launching KUAL, pressing the entry "Cool Reader" there, thus starting Cool Reader's internal launcher. The same is true for KindCalc. This intermediate step is absolutely unnecessary for everyday's usage. The last fw which allows using Kindlets is 5.8.11. That's what counts in my point of view.
