FeliCa cards

Anyone have experience with them?

I know it is a technology primarily used in Japan and US NFC will not work. Can one buy a blank FeliCa card though and use it or does it need to be programmed via a reader/writer first? Based on what I’m seeing on the RP1 and looking at documentation I’m not sure what the device would really be looking for a card to have already programmed on it. I’ve even seen FeliCa circular tags that can be purchased as well.

Would be great if I could just attach a card to my standard work lanyard or attach a circular tag somewhere and use it.

U.S. Source for FeliCA tags

I ordered type 3 tags from here (and attached to a belt retractable card holder). Works great:

You don't need to program the cards, simply put the Sony DP in registration mode and tap the card, you're done.

What is the difference between the different types? Can only type 3 be used with the RP1?
