Robert Jordan
The one thing that I miss about Robert Jordan's writing is the shear complexity of the books. I had to think about things to keep clear about the relationships between the groups, subgroups and the what not. Especially the Septs, Societies, Clans. Maiden's of the Spear and the Wise Ones.

Plenty of other equally - if not more so - complex fantasy around. Have you read Steven Erikson's 10-volume epic "Malazan Book of the Fallen"?

No but I will put it on my list to read. Is that a series that has concluded?

If you're willing to buy the entire series before reading it, there's an omnibus edition, The Complete Malazan Book of the Fallen, which at $84 is at least $10 cheaper than buying them individually. I was able to get it on sale last year for about $60, but I'm not sure if it's likely to go on sale again.

malazan i found to be incredibly painful to read
Jordan is my all time favourite, but in that same vein you should definitely check out Patrick Rothfuss and Brandon Sanderson (yes the same one who finished the Wheel of Time) the Stormlight Archive feels so much like WoT, it`s uncanny |

Malazan wont hold your hand and explain things, the first few books also leap from continent to continent with only a few characters shared between them. But it's a very well constructed large world.

Precisely. It requires a little effort on the part of the reader, but the effort is rewarded, to my mind.

Also talk about authors who aren't afraid to hurt and kill their characters. People swoon over George R.R. Martin for this, but I think Erikson could give Martin lessons. This makes the universe feel more real for Malazan since it's a got large military aspects.

In setting a scene, Jordan is exceptional and succinct though Vance is quicker, but Jordan can have the "pot boiler" tendency which becomes a malady at times. |
