You make it sounds like they're mutually exclusive. Can't imagine why anyone would think that.

I think the sandboxing argument is enough reason why AV software is a non-starter for iOS phones. It can't functon without special OS permissions. OTOH, Kapersky and others would provide a valuable service if they came us with an AV app that runs on jailbroken phones. Most known threats against iPhones only work on jailbroken phones.

Apple's app store is imperfect but is curated against threats better than other markets. I also expect Apple to respond near-instantly to exposed security flaws.

Please see post # 12. You may be surprised to learn how Apple responded to past security flaws, including a very recent one to OS X.

Yeah, it certainly isn't safe. Apple might check what API calls apps are using to make sure they're on the approved list, but there's so many ways devs could hide things in their apps that Apple cannot test for. Best they can do is react quick and pull the apps.

Shame they don't react as quickly when it comes to applying patches (as mentioned by others earlier with regard to flashback)

For some application domains they are mutually exclusive. For others, either can work with pros/cons to the open approach.

Exactly, it isn't the software or the hardware, it's the software in front of it... old proverb...
