You are right. I use epub and get that result. I rename the file to .kepub.epub, then the English characters are displayed correctly. Thanks for your suggestion!

In that case, you should try the KoboTouchExtended driver or the Kepub Output plugin. The first will convert to kepub on the fly when sending a book to the device. The second is to convert to kepub in the library and then send later. These are needed as the kepub renderer expects certain things in the books. If they aren't done, then things like the reading position are not recorded correctly. Without them, the position will track OK when reading, but if you close and reopen a book, you probably won't get back to the right place.

Thanks David. I purchased KA1 in last month, and started to read in kepub (by rename) a few days ago. I find that last read position is incorrect, and now know the reason!

For those interested to use command line, you can try:
calibre-debug --run-plugin "Chinese Text Conversion" -- -h to get a full list of supported arguments. |

I cannot convert some books from Simplified Chinese to Traditional Chinese. I find that the text files inside epub are encoded in UTF8. Do you come across that? Here is part of a text file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <html xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns:ibooks="http://www.apple.com/2011/iBooks" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:epub="http://www.idpf.org/2007/ops" xml:lang="zh" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><meta charset="utf-8"/><title>未命名</title><link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="assets/css/content1.css"/></head><body><p id="p0" class="s1 s2">银币故事</p><p id="p1" class="s3 s4"><img class="s5" width="200" height="180" src="assets/images/730689864.jpg" id="image-31" alt=""/></p><p id="p2" class="s3 s4"><img class="s5" width="200" height="182" src="assets/images/809711190.jpg" id="image-32" alt=""/></p><p id="p3" class="s6 s7">*</p><p id="p4" class="s6 s7">公元前527年至&#x 524D;430年,古代希&# x814A;城邦国家雅 178;铸造的货币Ծ B;四德拉克马银 币。银币正面&# x662F;头戴皮盔的 973;神雅典娜头Ԍ F;,背面是雅典 娜女神的守护&# x8005;猫头鹰。</p><p id="p5" class="s6</p></body></html> |

The plugin is not set up to handle XML/HTML-style numerical character references.
Maybe someone here knows of a tool or plugin that can convert these into actual characters... |

Try this:
In the Editor select Tools|Beautify All Files See before and after pictures in a file where I added some numerical character references. The "Beautify" tool appears to convert them to actual Unicode code points. |

At the bottom of the pop-up menu is a field to choose how much of the book you wish to convert. The option allows people to change the entire book, or only a portion of the book.
Based on the error message, I believe you have chosen "Selected File Only" without selecting one of the HTML files on the left. Select "Entire eBook" instead. |

BTW the plugin seems can't batch convert several files at the same time, can it?
thanks |

Yes and no.
The only way to convert several files at once is to use the command line option. There is no way to do it using the Calibre GUI. You need to open a terminal (e.g. PowerShell on Windows, xterm on Unix) on your computer and change directory to the root of all your epub files. To convert from simplified to traditional vertical text, enter the command at the shell prompt: Code:
calibre-debug --run-plugin "Chinese Text Conversion" -- -ol tw -il cn -d s2t -qt e -td v -tdo r -a T **/*.epub |

Version 2.3.2 Improve conversion speed
Version 2.3.2 24 Nov 2018
Improved conversion speed by approximately 25% Default to convert entire book for first time installation of the plugin Minor change to traditional->simplified phrases dictionary Details for those who are interested: The code selects conversion look-up tables based on the user settings. It then splits the book text into sentence fragments at each punctuation mark. Each sentence fragment is scanned with an ever smaller window looking for a match in the table. When a match is found, the matching text is replaced and the operation repeated recursively on the unmatched portions of the sentence fragment. The old code set the initial scanning window to the full length of the sentence fragment. The new code sets the initial scanning window to the smaller of the longest table entry or the sentence fragment length. This modification eliminated a lot of useless scans at the expense of adding one comparison statement. As always, see the Github page for implementation details. |
