Amazon is accepting mobi created with Calibre!

I don't know if I'm late, but I remember to read somewhere that Amazon was only accepting mobi files generated by KindleGen.

Well, yesterday I generate 2 mobi files (old format only, PBOK), sent them trough gmail, and they was accepted...

Did you know this?

Am I late? ;-)

They've always sometimes accepted calibre-generated MOBIs. Except for when they don't.

Seriously, though. I think it was AZW3 (or MOBI/AZW3 hybrid) files that can't/couldn't be emailed (without conversion). I don't remember there ever really being a problem with the regular old-fashioned MOBIs.

I've always had mobi files accepted, I have no idea what KindleGen is.

It's the official Amazon tool for creating Kindle books. Calibre is fine for personal docs, but I'd strongly suggest using KindleGen for books intended for publication.

For publication, yes, but for archiving or personal reading, the disadvantage of KindleGen is that it embeds the ePub inside the mobi, resulting in a file with at least the double of the original filesize. Some people don't care, but that's not my case ;-)

I think amazon always accept mobi from Calibre. I always wish Amazon could accept azw3, so I don't have to side load them.

Me too, but some weeks ago I tried to upload some mobi files created with Calibre and they was all rejected, one by one, systematically. They were only accepted when converted with KindleGen.

Then I tried again some days ago, the same way, and they were accepted. I guess the only difference is that this time I changed one parameter in the conversion process: I changed from "both" (old & new) to "new" format only.

That's a pretty major difference . Amazon have NEVER accepted personal docs in pure KF8 format.

I'm sorry. I wrote 'to "new"' but in fact was 'to "old"' only.

Sorry.

Found how to convince Amazon to accept (in certain situations) pure KF8 format.
Take any ePub book uploaded to our forum, convert it to mobi with kindlegen, extract azw3 using KindleUnpack, rename azw3 to mobi, send via Send to Kindle, you're done.
Same succeeded with ePubs from Project Gutenberg.
Interesting that ePubs converted by Calibre most often get rejection.

That is very useful information, thanks. Is it really necessary to rename to .mobi?

Sure, otherwise Send to Kindle doesn't see the file.
Again, note that I saw multiple failures when input ePub had Calibre tags. Looks as Amazon converter checks the file internals for Calibre fingerprints and marks file dirty if finds them :-)

calibre css, or meta tags? The meta tags are essentially junk to anything other than calibre, so maybe kindlegen just rejects the file as dirty with nonstandard weirdness.

If its the meta tags, you can strip those out. If it's css then Amazon is being devious, and you can still strip those out.

were they marked as 'Personal Documents'?
I have that problem when sending Non-amazon books

Yes, they are marked as "Personal Documents".

But, as long as I know, this is not a problem but, instead, a feature.
