A thread for 2014.

We point out free and bargain SF/Fantasy titles to each other. Please don't post any self-published books*, and please do a search before posting to avoid duplicates.

Be aware that many freebies are only free for a day, so grab them fast!

*Unless you have read them yourself, think they are excellent, and you're not connected to the author in any way.

Email from Night Shade:

BRAVE NEW WORLDS edited by John Joseph Adams, is on sale for $1.99 at amazon and Barnes & Noble:

Quote:
From Huxley's Brave New World, to Orwell's 1984, to Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, dystopian books have always been an integral part of both science fiction and literature, and have influenced the broader culture discussion in unique and permanent ways. Brave New Worlds brings together the best dystopian fiction of the last 30 years, demonstrating the diversity that flourishes in this compelling subgenre. This landmark tome contains stories by Ursula K. Le Guin, Cory Doctorow, M. Rickert, Paolo Bacigalupi, Orson Scott Card, Neil Gaiman, Ray Bradbury and many others.

PhoenixPick's Ebook of the Month—September (freebie) is Future Perfect: Six Stories of Genetic Engineering (collection) by Nancy Kress.

Description:

Nancy Kress is unrivaled in her treatment of genetic engineering. In 1991 she wrote the ground-breaking classic novella Beggars in Spain (Hugo/Nebula) and since then has only enhanced her outstanding reputation of telling stories set in the near-future and dealing with genetics.

This collection brings together six of these stories written between 1984 and 2008, including "The Flowers of Aulit Prison," which won the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for best short story.

Fortune's Pawn by Rachel Bach is $1.99 at Kobo and Barnes and Noble. It is also discounted at Amazon. It was recommended by Ilona Andrews on "her" blog a while back.

Quote:
Devi Morris isn't your average mercenary. She has plans. Big ones. And a ton of ambition. It's a combination that's going to get her killed one day - but not just yet.

That is, until she just gets a job on a tiny trade ship with a nasty reputation for surprises. The Glorious Fool isn't misnamed: it likes to get into trouble, so much so that one year of security work under its captain is equal to five years everywhere else. With odds like that, Devi knows she's found the perfect way to get the jump on the next part of her Plan. But the Fool doesn't give up its secrets without a fight, and one year on this ship might be more than even Devi can handle.

If Sigouney Weaver in Alien met Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica, you'd get Deviana Morris -- a hot new mercenary earning her stripes to join an elite fighting force. Until one alien bite throws her whole future into jeopardy.

Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer is only $2.99 this week Amazon US B&N Nook

Book one of the Southern Reach Trilogy. I've read this and the second book (Authority) and really enjoyed them both. It's like literary SF horror (think of something like Lovecraft meets Kafka meets naturalist Edward O. Wilson).

Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; the second expedition ended in mass suicide, the third expedition in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within weeks, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy, we join the twelfth expedition.

I second the recommendation. It's the first book in an exciting space opera trilogy.

Children of the After: Awakening (book 1) by Jeremy Laszlo is free on Amazon US

Description:

It has been six months since their father locked them in the security vault with a promise to return. But he never came back. With supplies running out and vital life support systems failing, Jack, Samantha, and Will have no choice but to ignore their father’s warnings and leave the vault. With no knowledge of what befell the world outside, or what they might expect once the door is opened, they find themselves in a world they do not recognize.

Thrust into the remains of the world they remember, how will they survive on their own, not knowing what or who else remains amongst the ruins?

Turns out it's this month's Orbital Drop selection, so it should be discounted everywhere, including Google and iTunes, in addition to the ones noted above. Their page says "Expires in 3 weeks" but from what I've seen, it'll continue to say that until next month's selection, usually a few days into the next month.
