Well, downloading to the Mars android eink using stock browser from my own website is perfect, and then I can open in KOReader (eInk Bro Browser crashes on downloads) via clicking on Notification.

The K9 Email also works, though I can't see how to "force" a sync. It does IMAP and/or POP3 with multiple servers / accounts.

Tapping on the attachment saved it in "Downloads", possibly on SD card and then I was able to open it in KOReader. But it would be be simple to use the Browser on a Kobo to download from anywhere?

However if you want to read from multiple different places with DRM, then a PC is needed. If DRM free, then having your own hosting and also downloading from elsewhere beats email.

Any decent phone does USB2Go and will allow transfer of emailed or downloaded ebooks/pdf to any Mass Storage USB eReader.

Probably best to let the Grandpa's decide what works best for them.
My Dad (who was a Grandpa) did read the newspaper and some magazines, but he didn't read books. So no issue with a Reader for Grandpa.

Grandma didn't mine plugging in her Reader to the USB port and pressing connect.
