Free (Kindle) Lone-Wolf Lawman by Burt Kroll [Undercover Deputy vs Marshal Western]
Lone-Wolf Lawman by Burt Kroll, a pseudonym for British author Donald S. Rowland (ISFDB, SFE) is his vintage standalone western historical action adventure novel, starring a State deputy gone undercover to bring to justice his late Sheriff brother's killer in a town where the local law is crooked under the corrupt Marshal and few allies will come to his aid, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Pioneering imprint.
This was originally published in 1974 by Robert Hale. Despite the suggestively paranormal-looking pale bloodless dude in moonlight cover of the reprint , apparently this does not in fact have lycanthropic elements, unlike a recent more Harlequin novel which shares the same name. Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program) Description Cole Carson is an under-cover State deputy with more a grim duty to perform. He has to find the killer of his brother Sheriff Mark Carson. He enters Bendersville aware that the local law is crooked, but he needs more than knowledge to beat the set-up led by Town Marshal Reuben Klark. Aided by the new sheriff Ed Jarrett, he works under-cover picking up snippets of the local gossip and questioning the old timers to get the lay of the land. Carson has to call upon his own brand of lone-wolf law dealing, remaining in the background, facing odds and braving dangers from desperate men who have no intention of forsaking their lawlessness. He starts his campaign in a tough way - and that's how he means to go on, beating an assassination attempt and foiling the abduction of an innocent woman. The question is: how long can he fight the opposition without going down? |
