Kindle Software Update Version 3.1 -- Early Preview Release

Kindle Version 3.1 Overview

We're excited to announce that a new, free software update is available for Kindle (Latest Generation). It's free and easy to download. Some of the features included in this update are:

* Public Notes -- This feature lets Kindle users choose to make their book notes and highlights available for others to see. Any Kindle user -- including authors, their fans, book reviewers, professors and passionate readers everywhere -- can opt-in to share their thoughts on book passages and ideas with friends, family members, colleagues, and the greater Kindle community of people who love to read. This is a new way for readers to share their excitement and knowledge about books and get more from the books they read. To review and turn on Public Notes in your own books, view the Public Notes of people you follow, track your reading activities, see Popular Highlights and your annotations, and view your full library of books, go to https://kindle.amazon.com. * Real Page Numbers -- Our customers have told us they want real page numbers that match the page numbers in print books so they can easily reference and cite passages, and read alongside others in a book club or class. We've already added real page numbers to tens of thousands of Kindle books, including the top 100 bestselling books in the Kindle Store that have matching print editions and thousands more of the most popular books. Page numbers will also be available on our free "Buy Once, Read Everywhere" Kindle apps in the coming months. If a Kindle book includes page numbers, press the Menu key in an open Kindle book to display page numbers. Learn more.

Thank god they added page numbers. Hopefully, that will be the end of that eternal (never going to change anyone's mind) argument.

The magazine/newspaper update looks nice, as well.

Personally, I won't much care about page numbers (useless unless you have the same editions and on the Kobo, I'm on the same page for turn after turn)

You could say the same thing about page numbers in a DTB as well. That is why you have to cite the books edition, translation, and all that fun stuff so that people know which book to check for the page number. All someone using a Kindle edition should have to do is note that it is a Kindle edition and the page number.

I don't care much about page numbers either, but the new newspaper and magazine layouts, or the "Before You Go" feature might be nice, we'll see. So far it doesn't look like there's much of anything interesting in the update for me.

I agree completely. But, boy did the lack of "real" page numbers seem to trip a lot of people up (and apparently bug the bajeebus out of them)!

Seriously, kudos to Amazon for listening to its customers and trial studies and taking their time to do it the right way.

It's that attitude that makes them the success they are.

"Before you go," displays an extra screen at the end of the book allowing you to Tweet/Share that you've finished the book, and to rate it. I will probably never use this feature. I'm looking now to see if it can be turned off.

You can ignore setting up the social media stuff, but still use the ratings feature at the end -- it now uploads to your Kindle.amazon.com page, from what I can tell.

The way they have implemented it, the page numbers are tied to a specific print edition, and the source ISBN number is provided. So they don't even have to say it was a Kindle edition.

It's a lot more work than previous methods, so I wasn't sure they'd manage it... at least not this soon. But judging from all the feedback they got from users and trial studies in universities, it was a smart move, particularly for academic settings, where it should give them a serious edge over non-hard-coded pagers.

Note that ADE does support hard-coded pagination; however, none of the major publishers use it (probably because it's only possible through a violation of the ePub specification).

Hopefully Adobe will add NCX pageList support in response, removing publishers' only reasonable objection to not including hard-coded page numbers.

Still waiting for Kindle DXG firmware upgrade so PDF experience can be like Kindle 3g or better.
