The problem was caused by a dose of "present tense" in scripts. Feeding more of it might help scriptwriting, but would be contra-indicated for grey matter used to read novels.

Just came across this web page that discusses use of tense when writing Star Trek stories and it reminded me of this thread.

... it is important to write all articles from a single perspective: i.e. that of someone looking back at the past. This helps to keep Memory Alpha consistent and understandable. A specific point in time has not been defined, but if it helps, pretend that we're writing and viewing this data archive at the end of time, long after the Star Trek universe as we know it has ceased to exist.

I wouldn't call Memory Alpha articles "stories" but that is interesting. I've noticed the consistent point of view from time to time, and it should have occurred to me that it was by explicit directive.

I just finished Whisper Down the Lane which alternates between chapters written in first person present tense and flashback chapters written in third person past tense. Either way, rcentros would enjoy at least half of the book.

Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow is written in first-person present tense -- which was very very odd for genre fiction at the time. (Quite a few of the legal thrillers that followed it were written in the present tense, presumably to emulate it.)

A lot of new adult books are written in the present tense. Some young adult books are in the present tense, too. (I think The Hunger Games was in the present tense?)
