Anyone have a nook color and an ipad?

I originally bought a nook color to use primarily as a magazine reader and liked the bonus that I could browse the web and watch movies, etc. Well I've found the internet experience to be less than desirable on the nook color.

I have several trips coming up and didn't want to haul my 17" laptop with me so I started looking for new ones.

Well I came across a great deal on an ipad. So I brought it home to try it. Several people now have told me that I can sell my nook color because the ipad will work the same way.

Trouble is that I like the size of the nook color for book reading and also it is a great size for my purse. I'm not sure that I want to sell it.

I'm thinking about keeping both because to me they excel at different things. Anyone have both and find they use one more than the other? Did you end up selling one?

I have had an iPad, bought the first day they released it last April. It was my first Apple product, though I'd been a Kindle owner for about six months, and owned a smart phone or PDA of one kind or another for over a decade. I wanted the iPad for traveling--I take several business trips each year, and do some "for fun" travel that sometimes involves flights to Europe or Hawaii. I had been enjoying a teeny-tiny "Creative Labs" media player with a postage-stamp sized video screen, and thought the iPad would be excellent for watching videos in flight, and I figured it would be an acceptable reader and way to play games. I've really, really enjoyed the iPad! But I do find the size a little bit too large for travel. It's not so bad while traveling by plane, but once I get to my destination it can be a nuisance if I don't have a hotel room or rental car to leave it in (and even those aren't ideal). Plus, it is expensive enough that I'm nervous about leaving it in checked bags I might leave with the hotel during the last day of a meeting before flying homes and similar situations. But it is so large I don't want to take it with me during those days!

I also use the iPad at home a lot, something I didn't expect to be as popular as it ended up to be. I love some of the games and apps, and I especially love browsing the web while leaned back in my recliner.

Late last year I escorted my elderly mother when she went to the Mayo Clinic, and I took my Kindle with me to read while waiting for her while she saw the doctors. I found that my Kindle inside the Amazon lighted cover was a good size to slip into a pocket on my photo vest, and was a lot better companion to take walking around with me than the iPad. Since then, I've wanted a seven inch tablet that was less expensive than the iPad, but wasn't happy with what I saw of the various Chinese ones with resistive screens.

I thought the Nook Color looked attractive for its capabilities, and being about the same size as my Kindle in the lighted cover, but didn't shell out for one till the recent ebay $200 deal. So far I'm quite pleased with it, but I haven't taken a trip with it yet.

Between the various devices, I find the Kindle is hands down the best device to read on, but is essentially useless for any other purpose. The games are better than nothing, and the web browsing is BARELY better than nothing, but my Android phone is better for both gaming and web browsing than the Kindle.

I love the iPad best of all for everything except pure reading (where it is much inferior to the Kindle). But it is a bit large for travel, and the expense makes me nervous about traveling with it.

Based on a few day's experience, I view the NC as a hybrid between these two. Not as good a reader as the Kindle, but better than the iPad. For watching video, it is about as good as the iPad (the smaller screen on the NC doesn't bother me for watching videos, I enjoy them as much as on the iPad). The NC is greatly inferior for games and entertainment, and the browser on it is not nearly as nice to use as that on the iPad. But the size is much more convenient to have around, and the expense makes it less stressful to care for in uncertain situations outside the home. I plan to root my NC to Honeycomb when a final release of Honeycomb is done, and that will improve the situation for apps and games, and probably enable me to have a better web browser.

I'm planning to keep all three devices, and will probably upgrade to an iPad 3 when they become available (the new iPad 2 doesn't tempt me). I'll keep the NC for quite awhile I hope, eventually technology will advance to the point where I'll decide I "need" a better small tablet and I'll decide what to do at the time.

Hope this helps.

I just bought an iPad 1 this past week when they dropped the price by $100 to clear them out before the iPad 2 arrived. I had thought $500 was way too high for one, but $400 was a bit better though still high. I had played with them in the store a few times, but never had the chance to spend any time with one at home. Here is my impression of both:

iPad 1: Overall it is really cool. Apps work very well as does the touch screen and the iOS is a lot more mature than I thought it would be. (I installed the new 4.3.) It simply works, works well, and you don't have to jailbreak or fiddle with the file system to make it work. The screen is not as good for reading as the nookcolor screen, but it works well without eyestrain. And I have my choice of bookstore related apps (Nook, B&N, Kindle, eReader, etc.) as well as non-bookstore related apps (iBooks, Stanza, Bluefire, iFlow, etc.). Admittedly I bold the text on all my books regardless of which device on which I read them. But it is bigger and heavier, so it isn't as portable as the nookcolor are as easy to hold, but it is usable. Where it really excels is in the other apps (non-book related). I can sync my Outlook email and calendars, I can surf the web in a browser that is TERRIFIC, I can view PDFs and other office files without a problem. Overall, the iPad is a hands down winner as it has the better OS, apps experience, office documents experience, web experience, and best overall usability experience.

nookcolor: It has a great screen. That is about it. The stock ePub reader is very lacking in features and functionality. The web browser is just awful--it will not even properly display the B&N website. Android is designed for smartphones and to increase Google revenues and it really sucks on a tablet, so rooting is still not as good as a stock iPad. The NC if rooted adds a lot more apps, but the experience won't be as seemless and pleasant as the iPad. Overall, the nookcolor is an okay reader with a terrific screen, but it loses in every other categaory to the iPad, and since the iPad is more flexible (without rooting) as far as reading apps goes it pretty much ties the nookcolor in that area. The only true advantage I can see from the nookcolor is it is much more portable and a bit lighter.

Also keep in mind that I hate Steve Jobs with a passion and try to avoid buying Apple's pricy and overrated products, so I waited 9 months to get an iPad. I'm definitely not a Apple fan nor an Android fan. But my hat is off to Apple for the iPad. My nookcolor now sits unused and will soon go up for sell in the fleamarket.

I have a NC and my wife has an iPad. I would second what Jack said. He pretty much nailed it except I will continue to use my NC while my wife continues to use her iPad.

Have Both Also and..

Nook Color (1.1 rooted) wins hands down for the following reasons:

1. Not tied to a closed OS/Software system

2. Rooting was far easier than I thought and opened up many other Android readers - my current favorite is Moon+ because it scrolls. XDA-developers is a great site for advice and help in customizing a Nook Color

3. Nook is much lighter and more suitable for my smaller hands -I can also slip it into my jacket pocket.

4. Easy to sideload books/documents.

5. Finally, the screens are identical in response/color rendition/resolution (as they should be since both are in-plane displays made by LG - only difference is 7" vs 9.7".

It is very easy to sideload books to iPad as well. Easier in my opinion.

realizing that I can get an ipad one for $349 16g refurbished or less, I was having a little buyers remorse on the NC until I actually spent a good bit of time playing with an ipad 2 at an apple store today. The text didn't look as crisp, and while I like the larger screen and the two page view, I like that the NC is smaller and feels more portable.

I know I will eventually own a "pad" but for now I will live with my NC and macbook pro.

My wife got an ipad 1 with the refurb price drop to $350.

I still prefer my NC. Android apps generally scale to the NC's resolution absolutely fine. I finally found one today that didn't - some random Mickey Mouse puzzle app I downloaded for my 3 yr old.

I prefer my rooted NC over my wife's ipad. I hate the ipad though - the lack of video out, memory card slots, usb, and required tie in to itunes drives me crazy.

Also, the ipad is too big and bulky for me. 7" or so is just right for a tablet for me, and it subs as an e-reader when it's dark, or my e-ink nook isn't close at hand.

The weirdest thing is the lack of widgets, a notification bar, etc. It feels weird to play with an IOS device with no back button, no notification bar, etc, after a few months after moving from an Ipod touch to with an android phone and an android tablet. Not my thing.

My wife has an ipad I have a nook color. One thing I noticed off the bat is the size makes a huge difference in portability. I'm able to carry my nook in almost any pocket, tljaket, sweater, pants. The ipad not so. As a result I carry my nook everywhere, while my wife only carries her's on vacations but leaves it in the hotel room.

I personally hated the default nook software, since I had an android phone before the nook I found B&N custom android to be frustrating. So with no effort I installed a full android is on this device. Now I love it. It has become a very portable tablet and is awesome at browsing, reading, and writing.

If you are not always traveling or on the road, is a no brainer, sell the Nook Color. If you don't need those extra bucks and would like to keep or use something when traveling or not at home, keep it.

The iPad is not a good alternative for people who needs a portable device. Now, reading technical books and PDFs on the iPad with GoodReader has no comparison, it's just amazing. Browsing on a 10" color screen is also better. I can tell because my Android Tablet has Flash on it but is way much better the iPad on that particular aspect. I downloaded "Mercury" and does a great job, really good browser, better than Safari.

I use my Galaxy Tab for on the road needs; it excels and beats the Nook Color in everything and has official Android and Samsung support (runs Froyo out of the box)

Hey Joe will you ever reveal on what happened between you and Barnes and NOble? I mean your hatered of this company and it's products are becoming things of legend on this board.

I'm asking this in a serious manner, just what is your reason for such hate for them? and Please don't say the " idon't hate them" yadda yadda speech.

You bash them on every single chance you get, so something had to have happend, What gives?

Here's something to think about: I've downloaded the Nook app for the iPad, and discovered that the magazines that I read on my NC will not open on the iPad. AT ALL.

I got my iPad just before Christmas, and newer iPads might be different.

If you like both and have no financial worries about owning both, then just keep them. I agree with you on the 7 inch screen, it's the best IMHO size for reading and portability.

I like the ereader UI of the nook color to the iPad but having both they can compliment each other especially since the nook app will synch up to your nook color.

If you enjoy both then keep both. Why not?

I have the iPad2, but had no issues with 1st gen. My wife and I prefer Zinio though and you should try it if you have an iPad; I think Zinio is more powerful and better for Magazines than the Nook app.

I like Nook for Android a lot but Nook for iOs feels and look different; when you see the reviews, lot of people share the same opinion. The opposite is also true for Kindle, at least for me. Hate the Kindle for Android and crashes a lot. I do like the Kindle for iPad! It is more refined and more stable.

For me, it mostly came down to size. I find the NC a *much* better size for reading and couch surfing. The other reason I ended up returning my iPad was that it didn't have enough capability to replace my ASUS T91MT for travel. I maintain websites, etc. so multi-window, easy C&P, ability to code, etc. are all crucial to me. So, the iPad was too big for reading, and underpowered for my travel needs, which left it being sent back to Apple for a refund.
