FYI -- there appears to be an issue with the latest firmware update to original Echo devices. Mine went belly up (red ring of death) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday -- wouldn't connect to WiFi, multiple soft resets, and I finally called Amazon CS this morning. After an hour on the phone with a very nice person in Jamaica (I timed it), and everything up to and including a factory reset, it's been passed to their technical department. At least one other MR member has also had their original Echo go belly up this week, which leads me to strongly suspect a failed firmware issue.

Either that or a little push to get folks to upgrade to newer models (what me cynical? Why yes, yes I am!). Thankfully both of my original Echos are still working, as are all my gen 2s and dots.

I've been having on and off trouble the last two weeks with audio book operation on my Echo. I tell Alexa to pause repeatedly and she just doesn't do it or does it randomly. "Stop" mostly works. What gives. It worked 99% of the time before and now it's about 60%. Suggestions? Note, this is Audible streaming , not Bluetooth from another device.

To me it just seems like the newer crop of high tech folks are trying to patch together too many capabilities into their devices rather than taking the time to design said devices and systems from the ground up with these capabilities in mind. We consumers wind up with a patchwork, Frankenstein device that does nothing very well and a lot of things half a$$ed. A friend of mine from my youth used to say about himself, "I'm a jack of all trades, but a master of none." That is how I view companies these days which build devices like Echos. They try to make them do everything, but they really don't even know how to make them do any one thing as well as it should be done. The results are disastrous and little more than fuel for SNL jokes. |

Both my brother and i have the Original Echo and had no bricking happen, so clearly this is not an issue for all 1st generation Echos.
