WTB: Ability to change indent without ticking 'remove spaces between lines'

I have found myself, lately, wishing that this were so. Would it be difficult to implement, Kovid?

Generally, one has either space between paragraphs, OR indents. You would not normally want space-separated paragraphs WITH indents. That's why it makes sense to only allow the indent to be specified if "remove paragraph spaces" is also selected.

I agree wholeheartedly that most people, including me, would not want indents AND spaces. However, in my case, I like no spaces, and often, a different indent than a given book I come across might have. However, many authors use a space to delineate portions of the story, and ticking the 'remove spaces' usually (though, curiously, not always) removes those, as well...and that can be a little confusing.

Thus, my request.

Interesting; I've used the "remove paragraph spaces" option in many books, and it's always preserved the larger "scene change" spaces!

Yeah, like I said, it's kind of hit and miss, it seems to be to me. I think perhaps there's a different html tag for the 'scene break' space, than just a line space, maybe? And calibre knows not to remove those, but obviously reads the other kind as it would any other. I think?

There is no way for calibre to read your mind and figure out exactly which spaces to preserve and which to remove. For that, you must use an ebook editor, like Sigil, where you can tell it exactly what you want done, explicitly.

The remove spacing feature simply blindly removes spacing between all <p> and <div> tags.

How does it arrive at not removing some of the scene break spaces, kovid? Is that a different tag?

You can change the indent though without changing the spacing - you just need to use the extra css option instead:

Code:

p { text-indent:3%;}

Note some modifications may be required based on the existing html/css - using extra css isn't as big a hammer as the remove spacing option.

There are a number of discussions on this in the conversion sub-forum, just search for extra css for a lot of different examples.

There are many ways to create a scene break. Some will survive the removal of spaces between paragraphs. These include:

<BR />, as Kovid mentioned
A special style on the first paragraph of the new scene that sets an increased top margin
An element that is normally visible but styled to be hidden (e.g. an <hr> tag with the appropriate CSS)
