Open source firmware hacking/development

Since it is becoming more and more clear that there wont be any significant firmware updates at least for the original Story, I am reconsidering to make modifications to the firmware myself. It is (supposedly) open source, after all.

I would like to gather some links and information to the current state of open source hacking/development going on for the iriver devices. If there is already a place where such information is represented, please point this out.

I am not a great programmer and have no previous experience with embedded devices, so all contributions and exchange on that matter is much appreciated, if anyone here is more familiar with the matter.

These are the links I am aware of at the moment:

Sources for various (all?) parts of the iriver Story firmware 1.71:
http://www.iriver.com/opensource.html
No information on how to compile, package and deploy the firmware, though.

Wiki page at openinkpot:
http://openinkpot.org/wiki/Device/Story
Some links but little actual information on modifying the firmware.
Since the openinkpot project is concerned with replacing the official firmware on ebook readers, they have a different goal. Since firmware of the Story is already open source, it seems more promising to modify it instead of replacing.

Some notes on EBOOK.HEX firmware file:
http://vanderwijk.info/tags/hacking-...linux-hardware
I have not tried the methods described.

The OS upon which the utility programs sit is open source but the utilities themselves seem to be proprietary. So you would be better to try openinkpot in an emulator and see what actually goes on from the boot up to the desktop.

Playing with the firmware may break the actual utility programs. So it would be better to move completely open source.

Can version v1.86 or v1.88 be used on regular iRiver? What are the changes in these firmware?

I have the 1.86 version almost ready to go in a virtual machine and I haven't seen any text files that give any information that would say no, but then again, there are none saying yes either.

This sounds interesting.

Could you please share what to do when you are successful?

I have an idea someone in here actually tested this, and found no change - for better or worse - to his Iriver Story after the upgrade.

I just followed the instructions that you pointed out. However I have been unable to get the emulator to boot. From what I have seen 1.86 is for the EB03 wi-fi model.

Modifying the system appears to be easy enough, but I think it would be a waste of time because of the proprietary applications. In my opinion it would be easier to go with the openinkpot option.

I'm not going to bother playing with this any more as I don't need any extra functionality from my iRiver Story.
