Free/Bargain Christian Interest, May 2014

We point out free and bargain Christian titles to each other. Please only post self-published books if you personally recommend them, and please do a search before posting to avoid duplicates.

Be aware that many freebies are only free for a day, so grab them fast!

Baker Publishing Group at Barnes & Noble (Baker Books, Baker Academic, Revell, Bethany House and Chosen Books at Amazon) used to have a slew of new freebies on the first of each month, but it looks like just a few new ones today.

One in particular looks interesting to me, though: They Shall Expel Demons: What You Need to Know about Demons--Your Invisible Enemies by Derek Prince is free at B&N and Amazon.

Quote:
If God is in control of everything, can Christians sit back and not bother to evangelize? Or does active evangelism imply that God is not really sovereign at all?

J.I. Packer shows in this classic study how both of these attitudes are false. In a careful review of the biblical evidence, he shows how a right understanding of God's sovereignty is not so much a barrier to evangelism as an incentive and powerful support for it.

J. I. Packer is author of the best selling Christian classic Knowing God. He is Board of Governors Professor of Theology at Regent College in Vancouver.

Four Ebooks by Rose Publishing on the End Times, Book of Revelation, etc.

This thread badly needs some love . . . .

Here are the four books making up the ChristianBook.com "eBook Daily Deal" for today. Being from ChristianBook they are all in the epub format. All of them are DRM-free, however.

All of the ebooks are published by Rose Publishing. Rose Publishing is known for their excellent graphics and charts.

As of about 2 a.m. today, 5/10 (Saturday), I have asked Amazon to match ChristianBook's prices. Amazon's ebooks are, of course, in the Kindle/mobi format. I plan to purchase two or three of the titles, but I'm going to wait to see if Amazon will match the prices. If you do the same, do not wait until after midnight tonight, as ChristianBook simultaneously will increase the prices back to their regular prices on these books and release a new eBook Daily Deal at that time or shortly thereafter.

Four Views of the End Times. By Timothy Paul Jones. Retail $3.99; today $0.79. http://www.christianbook.com/four-vi...544/pd/24077EB.

What's So Great about Heaven. Retail $3.20; today $0.79. http://www.christianbook.com/Christi...tem_no=64171EB.

Rose Guide to End-Times Prophecy. By Dr. Timothy Paul Jones. Retail $19.99; today $7.99. http://www.christianbook.com/rose-gu...629/pd/26839EB.

Understanding the Book of Revelation. Retail $3.99; today $0.79. http://www.christianbook.com/underst...520/pd/23580EB.

The Poetic Wonder of Isaac Watts by Douglas Bond is free from Ligonier Ministries' online store in DRM-free epub and mobi.

Be aware that signing up in their online store adds you to their (snail mail) mailing list. In addition to sending a lot of fundraising letters itself, Ligonier also sells its list (Rand Paul apparently thinks that fans of R. C. Sproul are fertile ground). If that would annoy you, the book's also free at Amazon.

Freebie--June Hunt's Book Friendship

(I suppose that I could have just as rightly posted this in the non-fiction thread, but with this book using the Bible for a lot of support, and it making a lot of references to both the Old and New Testaments, I thought that it would be more appropriate to post it here.)

Free through Monday (5/12). Free in pdf only, it appears. I couldn't find a rating in the usual places that I check, but June Hunt's writings consistently get very high ratings. http://www.rose-publishing.com/Asset...5#.U2_1j_ldUxE.

The description calls this a "minibook," but it is 96 pages.

"Make new friends but keep the old; one is silver and the other gold." Perhaps you remember singing that song as a child. Friendships are indeed valuable, but sadly, some friendships are toxic. This 96-page Friendship book is packed with advice on friendship, including how to be a good friend, how to make new friends, how to spot the warning signs of unhealthy relationships (including codependency), and more.

Discover God's heart on friendship and enjoy having Bible-based advice on how to build lasting, fulfilling, and healthy friendships!

With June Hunt's Friendship Minibook, discover—

-The difference between codependent and healthy friendships.
-How to reach out and be a friend.
-How to make new friends and create healthy friendships.
-How selfishness sabotages friendships.
-The value of vulnerability in friendships.

Indescribable (I'm not expressing my opinion, this is the title of the book)

This book is very highly rated at Amazon (4 1/2 stars out of 88 reviews at the present moment) and is marked way down--both the print and digital list prices are/were $14.99, but the Kindle price is now $2.24.

This book was free in 2012. Now, forget that bit of information because you are not in 2012; you are in 2014. It may never again be free; it may never again be $2.24 or lower, so you'd better grab it now if you haven't gotten a copy already.

You can get the book in epub if you want it, at Christianbook.com (and save a dime--total cost $2.14) and maybe elsewhere, although I can't imagine why you'd want epub (Please, don't send me hate messages, I'm just kidding!! Sometimes I buy an epub (like when I'm threatened with bodily harm if I don't)).

Anyway, here are the rest of the essential facts:

Indescribable: Encountering the Glory of God in the Beauty of the Universe. By Louie Giglio; Matt Redman. Kindle/mobi: http://www.amazon.com/Indescribable-...f+the+Universe.

Putting this powerful message into print for the first time, visionary pastor Louie Giglio and songwriter Matt Redman team up to write a heart-stirring book about the mysteries of God’s creation. Indescribable takes readers on a journey through the vastness of outer space and into the depths of the soul.

Modern science allows viewers to see farther into space than ever before, and every step draws them closer to the God who breathed each star into existence. In
Indescribable, the authors intertwine devotional insights with remarkable scientific facts that awaken both mind and spirit. As Giglio and Redman write, God turns wonderers into worshipers.

Above all,
Indescribable is a call to worship—an invitation to know and be known by the God of all creation and to become more passionate worshipers of Jesus Christ.

Apologetics Ebook in Kindle/Mobi Format

Holman QuickSource Guide to Christian Apologetics (Holman Quicksource Guides).
By Doug Powell. Four and 1/2 stars from 30 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $14.99; Kindle $2.99. http://www.amazon.com/Holman-QuickSo...urce+Guides%29.

In today’s pluralistic society, not every approach to sharing the gospel will work with all people. Being ready to give reasons for the hope we have in Christ means understanding the contextual framework of the people we are addressing.

Chapters include:
1. What Is Apologetics?
2. The Cosmological Argument for God’s Existence
3. The Teleological Argument for God’s Existence
4. The Axiological Argument for God’s Existence
5. Which God Exists?
6. Where Did the New Testament Come From?
7. Is the New Testament Reliable?
8. ExtraBiblical Evidence for Jesus
9. Is the Old Testament Reliable?
10. The Fulfillment of Prophecy
11. What About Miracles?

99 Cent Kindle Book for the Husband

For you dense husbands out there, no, this is not a book telling you to let everyone know how old your wife is or when she was born.

I just ran across this book and had to post it. Why? It is marked way down. Too, it is published by a major publisher (Crossway). And, out of 139 reviews at the present moment, it has 4 1/2 stars (note also all of the comments from celebrities, and good authors in their own right, about the book).

Date Your Wife. By Justin Buzzard. Print list price $10.99; digital list price $8.99; Kindle price $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Date-Your-Wife...date+your+wife.

An Intensely Practical Guide for Husbands Looking to Strengthen, Save, or Spice up Their Marriage

Most men don’t know how to date their wives. They did it before, but they’ve forgotten how, or they’re trying but it just doesn’t seem to be working. -Action steps at the end of each chapter
-Personal stories and real-life examples

All types of marriages—good ones, mediocre ones, and bad ones—will experience a jumpstart as a result of hearing, believing, and living the message of

Biblica is giving away an epub of The Books of the Bible New Testament. It's basically the NIV without chapter and verse divisions. This is part of their "Community Bible Experience" promotion. If you click on "free preview" and subscribe to their email list, you'll be redirected to this link, where you can download the DRM-free epub and some other promotional material.

Free inspirational historical fiction today from Amazon: The Deepest Waters by Dan Walsh. Published by Revell.
Quote:
What began as a fairytale honeymoon in 1857 for John and Laura Foster aboard the steamship SS Vandervere becomes a nightmare when a hurricane causes their ship to sink into the murky depths of the Atlantic. Laura finds herself with the other women and children aboard a sailing ship while John and a hundred other men drift on the open sea on anything they could grab as the Vandervere went down. Suspecting her John is gone but still daring to hope for a miracle, Laura must face the possibility of life alone--and meeting her new in-laws without their son if she ever reaches New York.

Readers will be holding their breath as they sail through this emotional and honest story of hope, faith, and love in the face of uncertainty. Talented author Dan Walsh skillfully tells an epic story through an intimate focus on two lost lovers. Inspired by real events, this moving novel will capture the hearts of all who dive into its pages.

Kindle Ebook on the Life of the Apostle Paul

The Life of the Apostle Paul. Rose Publishing. Four stars from 6 reviews at the present moment. Kindle price $0.99 (according to Christianbook.com, the retail price is $3.99). http://www.amazon.com/Life-Apostle-P...g+%28Author%29.

Rose Publishing is known for their excellent graphics and charts.

My posting of this ebook does not necessarily mean endorsement of any doctrinal positions taken in this work.

Life of the Apostle Paul: 200 Key Facts at a Glance
The Life of the Apostle Paul contains hundreds of facts at a glance, including colorful maps of Paul’s journeys, a time line of events, his letters and their messages, and much more. You can read this handy overview in about 30 minutes.

The Apostle Paul was the most prolific writer in the New Testament.
The Life of the Apostle Paul is an excellent study resource as you study Paul and his writings. The Life of the Apostle Paul contains:

• Background on Paul’s (Saul’s) education and his Damascus Road conversion
• Maps of Paul’s well-documented missionary journeys
• Time line of key events in Paul’s life
• His writings to key churches and individuals, their topic, and date of writing

This eBook provides information on Paul's background as a Pharisee and the many hardships he suffered on behalf of the Gospel, including:

• Being under arrest for two years without a trial
• Bitten by a snake
• Stoned
• Shipwrecked
• Betrayed by friends

The Life of the Apostle Paul includes key teachings on sin, justification, church leadership, marriage and singleness, and prayer to name a few. The eBook also includes:

• A timeline of key life and ministry events
• Maps of his three missionary journeys that covered approximately seven years, collectively, as well as:
• The names of those who traveled with him
• The main routes and approximate miles traveled on each trip
• A chart of Paul’s writings including:
• The name and a key verse from each letter, which include: Galatians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Romans, Ephesians, Colossians, Philemon, Philippians, 1 Timothy, Titus, 2 Timothy
• To whom, where and when the letters were written
• The theme of each letter
• Scriptures on the “thorn” in Paul’s flesh

This eBook is an excellent stand-alone study or is a helpful supplement to the Book of Acts and any of Paul’s epistles.

Amazon Matches Prices (Sort of) of Christianbook's Ebook Daily Deal on 5/10

If you procrastinated and missed out on the deal that I posted on 5/10 as being that day's Christianbook's "ebook Daily Deal," your procrastination has been rewarded: Amazon has just now dropped their prices on the same four books.

As usual, when Amazon has a sale on the same ebooks as Christianbook.com (but the format of their ebooks being mobi where the format of Christianbook's is epub, of course), at least, Amazon's prices are close, but not quite as cheap (e.g., the following ebooks that are 99 cents at Amazon now were 79 cents at Christianbook).

My posting of these ebooks does not necessarily mean endorsement of any doctrinal positions taken in these works.

Four Views of the End Times. By Dr. Timothy Paul Jones. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 23 reviews at the present moment. Kindle $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Four-Views-Tim...+the+end+times.

What's So Great About Heaven. By Benjamin Galan. Not rated at Amazon at the present time. Kindle $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Whats-So-Great...t+about+heaven.

Rose Guide to End-Times Prophecy. By Timothy Paul Jones. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 13 reviews at the present moment. Kindle $9.99. http://www.amazon.com/Guide-End-Time...times+prophecy.

Understanding the Book of Revelation. Rose Publishing. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 9 reviews at the present moment. Kindle $0.99. http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-...+of+revelation.

I feel certain that Amazon has done this because I called them "meanies" the other day for not matching Christianbook's prices then. haha

The David C. Cook freebie for this weekend is The Work of Christ by R. C. Sproul. Here's a link to DCC's page for the book.

Something interesting that I noticed is that there's a link on that page for the Olive Tree version of the book. It's still listed there at $19.99, but if you use of the Olive Tree software, it might be worth checking back over the next day or two to see if it becomes free there, as well.

Update: It's free at Olive Tree.

Confident Parenting by Jim Burns is Free

Published by Bethany House (Christian Publishers)

Quote:
Be the Parent Your Family NeedsIf we are truly honest, most of us don't really know what we're doing as parents. We have good intentions, but daily frustrations and on going struggles might be evidence that we were better prepared to drive a car or pursue our career than raise children. To counter the usual trialanderror method of parenting, Jim Burns offers timetested advice and strategies for today's busy families. Infused with his signature candidness and practicality, each chapter explores a different aspect of parenting from breaking generational chains of dysfunction and creating a warm atmosphere at home to handling discipline issues and blessing your children with a legacy of faith. Helpful follow up exercises and questions along the way reinforce the basics of good parenting and provide a foundation for developing your own family plan. You won't find any quick fixes here, but you will learn how to make a positive difference in your family. Endorsement"Jim Burns is a trust worthy voice on family issues; always practical, insightful, and biblical. Parent, Jim has a good message for this great mission." and mdash;Max Lucado, minister and bestselling author
