Cool Reader Engine

I see that KOReader uses the CREngine. I'm trying out KOReader and Cool Reader on my android tablet.

It seems like Cool Reader app is lagging behind on CSS support compared to KOR. Is there a plan for it to catch up?

Are there any other apps using the version of CREngine that KOR uses? I'm loving the reader, but would like a different file browser/library view.

Thanks!

To be honest, how well the app displays your eBooks is more important then the library view especially on Android where more reading apps have no clue what CSS is.

Yeah, and the plan was merged

So Coolreader now has all improvements poire-z made all these years (except RTL support, IIRC, and maybe other fancy stuff. I dunno)

https://github.com/buggins/coolreader/pull/174
https://github.com/buggins/coolreader/pull/186
https://github.com/buggins/coolreader/pull/203

Keep in mind that CSS is a buzzword in these forums. If you see a difference on behaviour between KOReader and Coolreader, where the former does something "better" than the later, please do check against a 3rd party program, like Sigil, and report upstream: https://github.com/buggins/coolreader/issues

It could be just that you're using a different set of rules on each program.

I'm comparing CSS/book layout of android apps to calibre book viewer on windows 10.

So far most common issue is not honoring publisher indentation (specifically when it's different for a first paragraph) and publisher fonts. Just tried out Readera, and it failed on those two issues. Looked into settings, and don't see any settings to adjust that.

CSS is not a buzzword. It's the set of instructions that says how to format th eBook. If the program doesn't respect the CSS, then you don't get the formatting you should and that's a bug that should be reported so it can be fixed.

It is a buzzword, Jon. Each engine has their own set of rules to render html. Here's chromium's html.css. The fact that your desired epub file doesn't override most of them doesn't mean they're not applied.

Before reporting "rendering differences" between engines you should check that the "root" rules are equal. For instance KOReader uses epub.css for lean & mean epub files and html5.css for generic web-like stuff.

Claiming that CREngine doesn't support a given tag just because it is applying "epub.css" rules don't help. Of course your book might override some rules but knowing how CSS inheritance works is helpful.

I'm not aware how to change Coolreader rules (or if it's possible at all). On KOReader you can set them on document styles (see attachment). Users are suggested to apply what about if html5.css before reporting issues.
