Free (nook/Kindle/iTunes/ePub) Deadly Devotion [Christian Suspense Mystery w/Romance]

Deadly Devotion by Ontario-resident Sandra Orchard is 1st in her Port Aster Secrets series of contemporary romantic suspenses with strong investigative elements and a twisty mystery plot (the series stays with the same sleuthy couple throughout instead of switching to a new one with each installment as most dedicated romantic suspense series do, and several customer reviews mentioned that the whodunnit was a challenge to figure out), starring a research scientist and a former FBI agent, free courtesy of Christian publisher Baker's Revell imprint.

The author's bio-blurb notes that she has received a Daphne DuMaurier Award for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense in both the inspirational and overall categories, as well as some other dedicated Christian fiction awards.

Currently free, probably just for a day @ B&N, Amazon UK (slated to drop in the main store after midnight Pacific Time), Kobo & iTunes & Google Play (all available to Canadians), and Christian Book (ADE-DRM ePub available worldwide), and can be added to your library @ BookShout (online reading & app download).

And this has been the selected (kind of by default, but the author's a fellow Canadian and has won a few awards, and it's got a scientist as the heroine, and apparently the hero is a transplanted* Canadian living out that X-Files career fantasy, so that bumps it up above the other stuff that popped up today) 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

(ETA: oh hey, apparently these are set in Canada. Now, do I possess sufficient morbid curiosity to try this without the extra incentive of seeing what the author got horribly, terribly, hilariously wrong about my country as I would have if the author had been non-Canadian, or do I read it to see what religious Ontario people think of BC's best-known agricultural export? )

Enjoy!

Description
Research scientist Kate Adams and her colleague Daisy are on the brink of a breakthrough for treating depression with herbal medicine when Daisy suddenly dies. Kate knows that if it hadn't been for Daisy's mentorship, she wouldn't have the job she loves or the faith she clings to. So when police rule Daisy's death a suicide, Kate is determined to unearth the truth.

Former FBI agent Tom Parker finds it hard to adjust to life back in his hometown of Port Aster. Though an old buddy gives him a job as a detective on the local police force, not everyone approves. Tom's just trying to keep a low profile, so when Kate Adams demands he reopen the investigation of her friend's death, he knows his job is at stake. In fact, despite his attraction to her, Tom thinks Kate looks a bit suspicious herself.

As evidence mounts, a web of intrigue is woven around the sleepy town of Port Aster. Can Kate uncover the truth? Or will Tom stand in her way?

* I was kind of hoping that the "herbal medicine" mentioned in the blurb would turn out to be the marijuana mentioned in the skim of the opening chapters of the novel, because that would have been really Canadian, but alas, this was not to be.

Oh well, maybe in another 5-10 years when decriminalization and legalization are further underway, at least on this side of the border.
