Ars: RIM Playbook gets $200 Price Cut

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/...nouncement.ars

Quote:
The BlackBerry PlayBook price cuts have arrived in the US, without any messing around with gift cards: the tablets now start at $299.99 for 16GB at Best Buy, a $200 discount. The question is whether anyone will care, with the imminent arrival of the new Kindle Fire.
Good luck with that.

edit: Well this would be unfortunate:
Quote:
Research In Motion has reportedly stopped production of its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and is considering exiting the space altogether. Collins Stewart analyst John Vinh made the claims in a note to investors Thursday morning, citing anonymous sources at RIM’s manufacturing partner Quanta.

I think you may end up with quite a few tablets on your $99 shelf in a short while

Again, no card slot. At least it's 16GB. Also, how large is the app store?

It isn't anything to write home about.
They are adding Android "compatibility" as well, but with limitations.

Quote:
Key features which will be unavailable to Android apps running under
the compatibility layer on the PlayBook and future BlackBerry devices
include Android's famed battery-sucking Live Wallpaper, SIP and SIP
VoIP, anything built using the Native Development Kit, apps containing
only App Widgets, and apps containing more than one activity tied to
the Launcher.

In addition, any packages which rely on Google Maps, in-app billing
services, Android's text-to-speech engine, or the cloud-to-device
messaging system will all be rendered unusable under the company's
runtime system.

With the kindle fire at 199, even 299 is way overpriced (the hardware is very similar between these 2 devices). The kindle has set a new price point, and everybody else will have to play ball, or exit the market. Well, maybe not Apple, there's always people willing to pay more for their products as long as they have an apple logo, (even when it's just a block of wood). I know, I know, old news...

Good point, but Joe Average won't care about any of those features. The PlayBook is dead in the water.

And there's the slight point that there is a teeny difference between a 7" tablet and a 10" tablet as well... I have an eReader so whilst I might take a 7" as a gift, I'd never buy one... my 10" Android tablet, on the other hand, is perfect for the things I wanted it for and I already have that so why does everybody have to play ball... Personally I find playing ball rather tedious and difficult with a nearly unusable right arm...

I think the price-point forcing others to "play ball" is still really yet to be seen. It hasn't even shipped yet. Though the pre-order numbers are looking nice, it's going to take the actual launch and the reception of the Fire to really say that others are going to struggle to compete.

The playbook was designed for BB users and the software that makes it viable for them is the bridge software.

Also when RIM delivers the Android emulator it will have access to a lot more Apps.

It's not dead, it has found a nitch.
