I've watched almost a dozen hands-on videos today, and seen over a hundred photos, yet not one of these tech sites bothered to open a book on the damn thing even after describing the device as like a book It was the same with the iPad Pro last year and any tablet really. Reviews will show off video and games playing on the gadget but never describe the reading experience. I had to purchase the iPad Pro and load my own comics before understanding I didn't like the curved edges when displaying content.

But I digress... my initial misgivings with the Galaxy Fold was the notch and I wasn't too concerned with the crease. Well it looks like you can hide the notch with software and if you rotate the device so the notch is at the bottom right, where I usually grip a device with my right hand, then the notch shouldn't be distracting.

The crease however is more worrying now. It's not so much that there is a crease as I'm quite happy to hold the Fold like a book. I now think they put the crease along the wrong axis. If the crease is often visible then it would be best to fold the screen in half in landscape mode. Instead the Fold looks a little awkward.

TCL’s foldable prototype:

My sense from talking to TCL executives is that their goal is to bring foldables below the $1,000 mark, and probably further than that still, though they wouldn’t commit to saying anything other than admitting surprise at Samsung’s epic $1,980 pricing on the Galaxy Fold...

TCL’s timeline for bringing either the 7.2-inch working prototype or anything else from the company’s developing foldable portfolio is focused on the middle of 2020. That’s still aggressive, to my mind...

My Samsung Galaxy Fold screen broke after just a day

Samsung does include one year replacement warranty (also covering accidental damage) in the Fold price fwiw.

You can tell the pioneers by the arrows in tbeir backs:

https://www.cnet.com/how-to/breaking...an-be-samsung/

Quote:

Samsung is aware of the issues and has said it's looking seriously into the matter. "A limited number of early Galaxy Fold samples were provided to media for review," the company said in a statement on Wednesday. "We have received a few reports regarding the main display on the samples provided. We will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter."

There may be a specific reason that some of the phones came to harm. Two reviewers experienced a total screen failure when they removed a thin plastic film that runs along the Galaxy Fold's screen. There's a narrow gap between this film and the bezel-edge of the display, which has led to confusion about the nature of the film.

It isn't immediately obvious if the plastic layer belongs to the phone or if it's the film you commonly see on devices to keep screens smudge- and lint-free during shipping and storage.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman found out the hard way that the latter wasn't the case. He tweeted this about his review unit on Wednesday: "The screen on my Galaxy Fold review unit is completely broken and unusable just two days in. Hard to know if this is widespread or not."

YouTube reviewer Marques "MKBHD" Brownlee had a similar experience after peeling the layer off his Galaxy Fold review unit.

"PSA: There's a layer that appears to be a screen protector on the Galaxy Fold's display," he tweeted. "It's NOT a screen protector. Do NOT remove it."
That's something that probably needed to go in the manual and on a sticker on the phone.
Just sayin'.

Half the screens broken on review units were from removing the top layer. The reviewers were warned in advance by multiple means not to remove it. The force of habit is stronger than most people would like to believe.

The CNET reviewer said they got no instructions. The warning came after asking.
It's on Samsung.

Will be interesting to see if the Huawei foldable phones also have the same film and failure modes.
