Ver 2.55.0 on Ubuntu 16.04 - Edit Metadata problems

Have used Calibre for over 15 years, it is the bets!
Lately I've a problem - when I select Edit Metadata - Edit Metadata Individually the latter flickers and I can't select it at all.
Anyone else experienced this? What should I do?

Yes, it does. Change your desktop environment from Ubuntu to GNOME and see the problem disappear.

Sorry for delay in replying.
Just how do I change my desktop environment? Will it affect the way 16.04 performs?

Install a new desktop and you will get an option to login to it from your login manager.

It isn't really different from using any other alternative software, e.g. Firefox vs. Chrome.

Unable to Edit Metadata - dropdown menu 'flickkers' and is inoperable

Using calibre-2.58.0-i686 on Ubuntu 16.04. Machine is an Acer 5735 laptop with 4GB RAM 250GB HDD. Calibre libray is held on a Seagate 2TB Expansion drive.
When I try to edit metadata the main dropdown menu appears OK but when I select 'edit metadata', the sub-menu ('edit metadata individually' etc) the sub-menu flickers and selection of 'edit metadata individually' or any other option is impossible.
In addition the 'move book to device' menu has similar flickering problems.
Can anyone help please? Calibre is effectively useless!
