My guess is, you will never find a general count rule that match to all behaviors of a spoken language.

Yes. It has one paragraph containing the single word "six".

The flaw in the question is that the different methods are using different word delimiters and hence different definitions of exactly what is a word. And that is in what punctuation is considered a delimiter. If you produced something with absolutely no punctuation, no numbers, nothing other than the 26 letters of the alphabet (assuming English) then the different methods should agree. Unless one of them doesn't count "a" or "I" as words.

If you want to do this, please generate the book. And run the stats on it. I'm sure there are people willing to look the results.

One comment on the stats. The difference between the plugins 2016 and 2017 ICU results should be the number of internal text files. The plugin extracts the text from all the internal files and appends them together into one big piece of text and then does the stats on this. There was an error in how this was done in that no space was put between the text from two files. That meant the last word of one file would be joined to the first word of the next. And the algorithms could count that as one word. This will also affect the old word count.

Closest to what Jon, how about the one that's closest to the nearest one.

All word counts are exact - according to the algorithm they use. If you find one that varies according to phases of the Moon or the number of syllables in the President-elects last but one tweet, complain to algorithm's purveyor. Or take it up at Reddit.

But that exaxtly is the point. Some examples:
E.g. take a look on a date:
22.11.2004. You can interpret this as on word. You can also say November, twenty second two thousand four or in German Zweiundzwanzigster November Zweitausendundvier (old style) or Zweitausendvier (new style)

or how do we count a printed adress like https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...134000&page=67 in a text. Is it one word or a grouping of xx words?

How do we count short cuts like e.g. in German z.B. and z. B. ( for zum Beispiel)? Is it one word or two?

Or street names like 21th Street. Is it two or three word? Or Frankenallee 71–81?

Is a Title page part of word count? How do I interpret an isbn number 0-1233-11323-44

Or words like 3D-Printer and so on.

If I look to my analyzed books, I can find a lot of things what is interpretable. So what is the point to start?

I converted the original EPUB to a DOCX and a TXT document. The difference between DOCX and TXT comes mainly form the TOC. The TOC is part of the EPUB but not part of a TXT file. Should I include it or not? If not, then the TXT is the nearest count reference (maybe).

I have no objectives to do further discussions on this here. I use a modified version (but not for the stats because of comparability with old values from last year). It only reflect some general issues apart from this PI with word count of all counting systems I know.

Anyway, feel free to delete my previous two posts #995 and #1000. No problem at all.
