Dutton, C. E.: Tertiary History of Grand Canyon 1882. V2. 5 Nov 2011

Originally published in 1882, Clarence Dutton's 'Tertiary History of the Grand Cañon District' has become one of the definitive books on the Grand Canyon. Commissioned as a study of the region's geology and issued by the fledgling U.S. Geological Survey, it is as much admired today for its literary as its scientific merits. With its beautiful illustrations by Thomas Moran and William Henry Holmes, it is a seminal work on the Canyon that has never been surpassed for its eloquence and authority. It remains the most evocative and compelling geological writing ever done on the Grand Canyon region. The original text and atlas are very rare, but both text and atlas were reprinted in 1977 (Pergrine Smith, Santa Barbara, CA, 1977, limited edition) and the text volume only was reprinted in 2001 (University of Arizona).

His report, based on his explorations of the Grand Canyon in the early 1880’s, was the most extensive and important study of that region to date. It is particularly notable for the great atlas volume, which contains some of the earliest and the most striking illustrations of the Grand Canyon: 12 double-sheet maps (most of which are printed in color) and ten double-sheet panoramas (most are tinted). One of the panoramas, entitled 'The Transept', is by Thomas Moran, the renowned Western landscape painter and etcher. The rest of the panoramas were done by the great geologist-artist William Henry Holmes, whose illustrations for this volume are considered “masterpieces of realism and draftsmanship as well as feats of imaginative observation” (Goetzmann, 'Exploration and Empire', p 512-13). It was the first published volume of the U. S. Geological Survey's Monograph Series, although it is officially designed as volume 2 of the series.

The epub includes all of the material from the 1882 book, including all 42 b/w and color plates. Because of the nature of the epub readers, these images are very small and low resolution, and cannot be studied in detail. Source was the Internet Archive.

For those interested in the book plates and atlas sheets, I have included multipart rar files for the two: the first being that of all the 42 book plates and the second of all the 23 Atlas sheets. My original book plates and atlas sheets pdf files were originally about 72 mb and 58 mb respectively; in order to meet the < 20mb size requirements of MobilRead rar splitting was required. Plate/sheet pdf files are very large because the images contained are high resolution and large size: 10" and 15" (long dimension) respectively for the plates and the atlas sheets. The rar compression didn't compress much but regeneration of the complete pdf files is simple with WinRar. Source of the atlas images was the Library of Congress web site (http://tinyurl.com/4x2gezy)

In V2 I've changed the cover and slightly rewritten the introduction of the epub; for the book plates and atlas sheets I've made major revisions in changing the orientation of all of the landscape plates to follow atlas/book images, and in altering the relative sizes of the book plates to more closely correspond to those of the book. I've also added covers to both pdf files, and close-cropped the margins of all the pdf files. With these changes, the book/atlas images are easier to study on a computer.
