Rolling Stone New Web Model

The venerable magazine is implementing a combination of free and paid web access next Monday:

Last year, RS had an in-depth article on Goldman Sachs. This quickly became a must-read article, and was one of the most highly discussed subjects on Yahoo's financial forums.

" ... a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money."

It appeared months before any type of investigative reporting series by the NYT, WSJ, Newsweek and Time. Move over Ann Rice and Bram Stoker. The biggest, baddest vampire has the initials: G.S.

Rolling Stone's paywall teaser is similar to the ones on the NY Times and Wall Street Journal sites. Each publisher attempts to get you to pay for deeper access to their current or past content, by teasing you with lead in news articles. However, in the case of Rolling Stone magazine, you could have bought their entire archive from 1967-2007 for a mere $15:

They must think the average person is asleep at the keyboard! Try a little harder, like Playboy magazine. They know how to suck money from subscribers.

Maybe the whole porn industry, with decades worth of loyal online following by their subscribers, does actually have lots of things to teach to other businesses which are trying to do the same.
