Not so dark fantasy...

For those of you who've been complaining that Fantasy is too dark lately...

Goblins by Philip Reeve - Guardian Review.

Anyone read him before? I know the name but have never indulged. Need recommendations, please.

Strong recommendation for the Mortal Engines series. It is marketed as YA probably because the main characters are in their teens (iirc). The worldbuilding is great and characters are engaging.

Were you asking only about Reeve or were you looking for not so dark fantasy recommendations? If the latter, (and no EPIC), how about Amanda Downum (The Drowning City), Matthew Sturges (Midwinter), Steven Brust (Viscount of Andrilanka series), Neil Gaiman (American Gods), Christopher Moore (Practical Demonkeeping- hilarious), any Terry Pratchett, Victor Gischler (Vampire a Go Go)(well maybe he is a little sick), Jaida Jones (HaveMercy), Naomi Novik (His Majesty's Dragon), Liz Williams (The Snake Agent).

I'd like to second Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos/Viscount of Andrilanka series. Lighthearted books full of murder, mayhem, mysteries and a little magic, where the main character is an up-and-coming gangster/assassin in an alternative medieval world where humans are seen as a nuisance and vermin by the ruling human-like Dragaerans. Fabulous fun!

Actually, I was kinda looking for recs on Reeve but thanks for the above. I prefer darker fantasy usually but every now and then something lighter is welcome. Neil Gaiman's American Gods keeps coming up as recommended, I am going to check this out someday.

And thanks to Belfaborac too!
