Lawrence, D. H.: Lady Chatterley's Lover. v1. 04 June 07

A famous novel from an important writer.

From one source:

"Lady Chatterley's Lover was banned for a time in both the UK and the US as pornographic. In the UK it was published in unexpurgated form in 1960 after an obscenity trial, where defense witnesses included E.M. Forster, Helen Gardner, and Richard Hoggart.

"Printed privately in Florence in 1928, it was not printed in the United Kingdom until 1960. Lawrence considered calling this book Tenderness at one time and made significant alterations to the original manuscript in order to make it palatable to readers. It has been published in three different versions."

And from the Wik:

"The publication of the book caused a scandal due to its explicit sex scenes, including previously banned four-letter words, and perhaps particularly because the lovers were a working-class male and an aristocratic female..."

This is an important novel, as both literature and social commentary.

I hope you enjoy it.

I just love most of Lawrence's works, he's both a great writer and an excellent psychologist. Spent some time last week adding most of his works on Feedbooks too in order to enjoy it on my reader: http://www.feedbooks.com/discover/view_author/30

Excellent stuff. When you read it today, you honestly wonder what all the fuss was about - the sex scenes seem very tame compared with what you can see on TV any day. Society's attitudes have certainly changed since 1960!

I just found the 1939 Grosset & Dunlap 1st American edition in a thrift store, complete with dust jacket, for $1.

Here is the blurb on the inside flap:

The theme of this - considered by most to be Lawrence's greatest work - concerns the right of a married woman to have a child by another than her husband. Connie (Lady Chatterley) is married to a man deprived by the war of the power of begetting. She begins by having brief affairs with several men. Then she meets Mellors, her husband's gamekeeper, and for the first time in her life falls really in love. Still she clings to the man who is her husband because of his belief that the 'habit of marriage is more vital than any occasional excitement," until one day when she knows that she is going to bear Mellors' child.
