ION Book Saver

The Ion Book Saver, cradle/camera device for quickly scanning in paper books and magazines, was announced this past January for $149, and it was supposed to be available within 3-6 months. That slid and slid and slid... I just noticed that the web page for the device on the ION site now says "COMING SPRING 2012." Sigh.

I had ordered one from Amazon when it said "Shipping within 1-3 months". A couple of weeks ago I got an email from Amazon stating that due to lack of inventory from supplier, the purchase has been cancelled.
Sigh.

Yes, I've been following this device.... I'd buy one as soon as it comes out. But they simply won't put it on the market!

Silly question - is it legal ?

In the strict sense of the word, that is, not OK/right/useful/sensible/ oh, you know what I mean.

Gray area. If you destroy the original copy, though, and in essence, just do a format shift then it's probably legal.

It's not legal in the UK, no. But this is, I believe, an American company.

Add me to the list of people waiting impatiently...

And the design seems to have changed in the meantime. Now it's got a tent.

Or rather, to clarify, USING it in the UK would not be legal for copyrighted material. The device itself is not illegal, per se.

I haven't heard anything, but I would be very surprised if there wasn't a long queue of publishers lining up to sue them out of existence. VCR and mp3 players would have gone the same way if they didn't have some very rich and very stubborn backers.

The test of legality has always been whether or not a device has significant non-copyright-infringing uses. That's been the case since video recorders first appeared on the scene; courts ruled that although they could be used to infringe copyright (by copying tapes) they could also be used for entirely legal purposes, such as time-shifting TV programmes, and hence were OK to sell.

The question is whether or not this device has a significant non-infringing purpose.

Digitizing personal photos, scrapbooks, making fair-use extracts of books for educational or review purposes etc. etc.

I would say yes.

I'm struggling to think of one. Mind you, mp3 players didn't have a non-infringing use either until relatively recently.

Non-infringing uses:
1) Converting personally owned items for personal use. The courts have long held that you can copy record albums to cassettes, etc, FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY, legally. You can photocopy an entire book that you own, FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY, legally. You just can't distribute the copy to anyone else.
2) Scanning out-of-copyright books. Perfectly legal.
3) Scanning excerpts from magazines or books for review purposes. Legal.
4) Scanning documents to which you (or your company) owns the copyright or has legal license to.

There are plenty of non-infringing uses.

I am waiting also.

This is not a high speed production machine. No Auto-feed.
It looks as if you place the open book, tap the 'expose' button, (wait?), slide the book out, flip page.

The problem is the name of the product. It will instantly give an impression of scanning full bio of Stephen King is piece of cake, zap zap. Book saver or Book killer. It depends on the point of view.

Basically this device does not differ from standard flatbed scanner. Its just an angled scanner. Or is it actually photocopier? Looks like a digital pocket camera with odd-shaped plastic thingie glued on it.

I agree with theducks. It doesn't look like it has autoflip functionality.
