And I just removed the 32bit version of python and installed the 64bit version, but, alas!, no avail.

Can someone on Windows who knows how to show the dlls linked with the 64 bit version of the "tidy.dll" file from this plugin, please post a list of its dependencies here so we can track down what is missing?

Running Dependencies on the x64 tidy.dll shows it as using:

C:\WINDOWS\sytems32\kernel32.dll

C:\WINDOWS\sytems32\kernelbase.dll

C:\WINDOWS\sytems32\ntdll.dll

C:\WINDOWS\sytems32\MSVCR100.dll

C:\WINDOWS\sytems32\rpcrt4.dll

Dependencies also showed a mass of DLLs that are stored with it's executable.

@Leonatus...I'm sorry but I am a little bit unclear on your responses. Please could you do the following:

• In Sigil, please click Plugins > Manage Plugins and check that "Use Bundled Python" is selected. If "Use Bundle Python" isn't selected then select it. Do not select an external Python path.
  
• In post #110 you said "However, I installed the latest version of Visual C++, but the error message is still the same." This is worrying because that is not what we asked you to do. KevinH has advised you to download and install a specific service pack for Windows -- Windows Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 -- which is a necessary and critical dependency for the plugin to work properly. So please could you make absolutely sure that you install Windows Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1, which you can download and install from this link:

After completing the above can you please retry using the plugin again.

You keep saying that you've installed the latest version of The c++ runtime files, when in fact, it is a very old version of the runtime that you need to install to get MSVCR100.dll (the dependency that libtidy needs). It no longer ships with Windows 10, so the only way it gets on a Windows 10 machine is if a) some other software includes it as part of there it's installation, or b) you specially install the version of the runtime distributable that includes it.

"Use Bundled python" did appear, as far as I remember, in older versions of Sigil. Now, there is a box called: "Use integrated python-interpreter", and that is checked. It is needed by other plugins as well.

Yes, this has been my error; I retried, and it seems to work (the plugin closes without a success note).

Is the removal of empty spans deliberate since there appears to be no menu option to enable/disable removing them.

@DNSB...Yes it was deliberate, since empty span tags serve no real purpose in any ebook, that's really why the plugin automatically removes them.

And if you are referring to ebooks destined for Apple Macs -- I believe that their old problem regarding the odd requirement and necessity of surrounding all centered text/images/links with empty span tags was fixed several years ago.

Are you guys talking about truly empty spans (<span></span>) or just naked spans (<span>some text here</span>) with content, but no attributes?

I ask because right, wrong, or indifferent ... blindly removing the latter (naked span pairs) CAN affect the rendering of validly styled xhtml in an epub.

I was talking about the <span>bla de bla de bla</span>. And yes, it did make a change which surprised me until I checked the CSS stylesheet where there was an entry for span which applied a style which applied to any span.

Also, definitely not trying to argue for you to change your plugin, but I just wanted to clarify to anyone else reading this that there can be perfectly legitimate uses of an empty naked span tag (and not even referencing the atrocities imposed by some devices that require spans around everything) in valid ebook html.

A <span> simply delineates a section of text from the surrounding text. Most often that span is given a specific class so that it can by styled differently than other <span>s. However, you can define a <span> without using a class or ID just fine. Here is an example:

<h3>Chapter 1 <span>This is the title of the chapter</span></h3>

The CSS would look something like this:

h3 {font-weight:bold; text-align:center; font-size:1.2em}
h3 span {display:block; font-weight:normal; font-size:.8em; font-style:italic; font-family:serif}

This very specifically defines which <span> is being styled (any <span> within an <h3>). It also minimizes code bloat (no need to say <span class="chaptertitle"> on every chapter).

It is certainly not required to do it this way...you can add extensively defined spans to every letter if you want...but having an empty naked <span> does not automatically mean it is wrong.
