Open files from within

I don't know too much of epub's code but i want to know if there's some way to open a file from an epub. Something like open a jpg, or a pdf, etc, when you make reference to something in the text. Of course i say an external file, not embebed.

But many devices cant support that (view 2 or chain books).
Other devices have no external connection when running.
In this one case, this is similar to a Paper Book. What is between the covers, is what you get to look at
