Broughton, Rhoda: Tales Told at Twilight (collected ghosts). v1. 09 Nov 2018

TALES TOLD AT TWILIGHT — stories of the supernatural by RHODA BROUGHTON (1840–1920)

This small collection presents the supernatural fiction of popular Victorian author Rhoda Broughton. Whether describing ghostly manifestations, prescient visions of death, or other mysterious occurrences, her stories often manage to give a new twist to folkloric elements, sometimes laced with threads of sly humor.

* * * *
Rhoda Broughton was a Welsh novelist and short story writer, with about two dozen books published. Her early novels earned a reputation for sensationalism, with fast heroines of easy morals, which caused her later and stronger work to be neglected by serious critics; but her work is notable for being slightly risqué, rather than sensational. Always an important feature in all her novels is criticism of woman’s role and position in society. Very often Broughton’s women are strong characters, and with them she manages to subvert traditional images of femininity, while never failing to tell a gripping tale.

She was encouraged in her literary career by her uncle, Sheridan Le Fanu. Respected Victorianist scholar Richard C. Tobias calls her “the leading woman novelist in England between the death of George Eliot and the beginning of Virginia Woolf’s career.”
