Baum, L. Frank: Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz (illus). v1. 20 Jul 2020
Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz
By L. Frank Baum (1856–1919) Illustrated by John R. Neill (1877–1943) With 25 black-and-white and 16 color illustrations, illustrated chapter heads, Author’s Introduction, and a Map of Oz. First published in 1908. The text is in the public domain worldwide. Illustrations are in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA. ---------------------- On her way back from Australia, Dorothy visits her cousin, Zeb, in California. They are soon swallowed up by an earthquake, along with Zeb’s horse Jim and Dorothy’s pink kitten Eureka (whose manners badly need adjustment). The group soon meets up with the Wizard and all travel underground back to Oz, meeting many exciting adventures along the way. * * * * Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 – May 6, 1919) was an American author chiefly famous for his children’s books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels. He wrote 14 novels in the Oz series, plus 41 other novels, as well as many short stories, poems, and plays. He made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and the nascent medium of film; the 1939 adaptation of the first Oz book would become a landmark of 20th-century cinema. His works anticipated such century-later commonplaces as television, augmented reality, laptop computers (The Master Key), wireless telephones (Tik-Tok of Oz), women in high-risk and action-heavy occupations (Mary Louise in the Country), and the ubiquity of advertising on clothing (Aunt Jane’s Nieces at Work). Even while he was alive, Baum was styled as “the Royal Historian of Oz” to emphasize the concept that Oz is an actual place. The illusion created was that characters such as Dorothy and Princess Ozma related their adventures in Oz to Baum themselves, by means of wireless telegraph. For over a century, readers of all ages have loved these stories, and many of the Oz characters and situations have become a part of popular culture. (—adapted from Wikipedia and publisher’s advertising) Available in “high-rez” with images based on 1100 x 1500px, or “low-rez” based on 800 x 1100px. ---------------------- Who knew so much fun could be had underground? .
