Would it be possible to make anyone without a location be forced to put one in? It would really help when trying to help someone because the answer(s) given may very well depend on where the person lives.

And make new registering people have to also put in a location.

I agree with Jon.....

It could be part of the signing up process.

Location is so important when trying to help with a question of book availability, or even trying to understand someones viewpoint.

It doesn't have to be specific,.....UK, United States, Canada, South America, etc would be nice.

You're gonna hate me BUT no one should be "forced" to provide information to a message board. They should share it only if they want. Maybe some kind of pop-up should appear when folks first sign up advising them that country and device info will make it much easier to help them, if they need it.

Asking is fine but forcing is another matter.

On the Continent idea, let's just take North America (Mexico, the U.S. and Canada), without the specific country the continent isn't of much use.

Yes, it is rather frustrating. Take for example Reader Library. Some of the problems are due to things that are a possible issue outside the USA. But unless we know where these people are, trying to help doesn't help. And if they want help, then they are the ones who need to give us enough information for us to help them. So if anyone is going to ask for help, then yes, they should have location filled in enough to give us the information we may need. If they don't want to fill in location, then don't come asking for help.

I personally don't think that it's a good idea to force people to publish their location. If such information is required to help somebody then we can ask for it.

I don't understand the reluctance of people to list their locations.

Not addresses, not states even, if they don't want.

Just location. US, Canada, Mexico, France, England, Turkey or the moons dark side.

What is the big deal?

Anonymity. Most members are here anonymously. Some want to be more anonymous than others, and won't like having to list their location.

Agreed, Daffy. But it would be in the interest of the poster and would optimise advice if location and device were listed. Perhaps this could be gently pointed out rather than demanding information that some folks (for whatever odd reason) might not feel comfortable about providing. Cheers. Neil

I think we've been gently requesting that information as it comes up all along. That why I suggested the pop-up advising them that it would be easier to help them when the information is provided.

And they certainly wouldn't want to admit they live on planet Earth. So long as they can enter anything they wish I don't see the harm.
