What exactly is a location
I find it a little confusing. I can tell is has something to do with a part of the current page you are reading but what exactly is it. On some books there are 10 locations per screen...

It is a byte count into the file, split into 128 byte chunks. It is used to locate bookmarks, highlighting etcetera.

Gotya. I guess it was too difficult to just keep track of the locations some place else (or behind the scene and use simple page numbers...

Page numbers wouldn't be consistent since text size can be changed; increasing or decreasing the total number of pages. I believe that's why location are used instead. They remain the same no matter the text size.

Personally, I would prefer chapter + paragraph notation since it easily translates between editions.

And what if the book doesn't have a TOC - eg a simple text file?

Then it could use another method, like a location number. Frankly I'm surprised that each format seems to only have one method available. Why not support multiple methods that appeal to different people and applications?

Even "paragraph" can be a fuzzy concept, depending on how the book is formatted. Some "paragraphs" could be created by line breaks, or paragraph tags, etc. Jumping to a location is far easier programmatically than trying to calculate where you are in a chapter and paragraphs. Ebooks are more like scrolls than books with physical pages.

The format is derived from HTML. You can't expect people to reinvent the Mobipocket format after all these years.

I think the paragraph configuration easily can change between editions. I assume some spelling corrections also can be made between the editions but the error introduced by this will not be acceptable with the current scheme.
