Unable to Connect CC to Calibre

On The PC in Calibre I have :
1) Started the content server (IP 10.1.1.3:8080)
2) Started the wireless device connection (IP 10.1.1.3)

I TRY TO CONNECT AS WIRELESS DEVICE

On My Nexus 7 I have Started Calibre Companion :
3) Select "Connect"as "Wireless Device"
Error "Could Not Find Calibre - Have you Started Wireless connections"
Note - see above - YES the Wireless Connection is started.

On My PC in Calibre I
4) Stop Wireless Connection
5) Select "allow automatic connections"
6) Set port = 9090
7) Tick "use a fixed port"
(Displayed Wireless IP is now 10.1.1.3:9090)

On the Nexus (Companion -> Settings -> Calibre IP Address)
8) IP Address 10.1.1.3
[FYI Nexus IP is 10.1.1.4]
9) Wireless Connect Port 9090
10) "Connect as Wireless Device"
Error "Failed to connect. If you specified an IP Address and port manually, you probably entered them incorrectly"
11) Repeat (4) to (10) using a variety of ports e.g. 9191, 9999.

I believe that I have done everything that the Help has asked me to.
I DID manage to get it to connect ONCE (and transferred two books). I have spent about six hours on this so far.

FYI I went off and did other things for a couple of hours. I came back and the connection worked (*1). I disconnected, and then tried connecting again, same problem. I will see what happens after another couple of hours.

(*1) With default ports.

Note - After several hours have retried. Still unable to reconnect, and unable to ascertain what is different about "now" and the two successful connections.

Intermittent connections are the hardest to debug.

Thanks for being willing to take some more time to help work out what is going on.

Starting at the beginning with things that we know can cause problems:

IP addresses in the 10 range are a bit rare. Are you on a home network? What else is on the network?
What brand is your network router (the one that separates the internal network from the internet)?
Does your windows machine have a fixed IP address? In other words, is it always 10.1.1.3?
Is there more than one network router/switch between your nexus and your windows machine? If you are on a work network then this is very possible.
Have you verified that calibre is allowed through the firewall on your windows machine (see the faq for instructions)?
Are you running any "network security suite" on your windows machine, such as McAfee or Norton?
Is the windows machine managed by an IT group (a work machine)?
Are you running anything like a "virtual machine" such as Windows XP mode or virtualbox?
Do you have a VPN installed? These are usually installed to connect securely to work networks.

Does your windows machine have any other network interfaces? To check this, open a command box (Start, type cmd into the "Run" box, press return. When the command box opens, type "ipconfig /all". You will see something similar to what is under the spoiler. Look to see if more than one adapter has an IP address.

Are you running a firewall on your nexus such as droidwall?
Do you have any other devices plugged into the windows machine, perhaps only for charging?

It would be very useful to get some debug information from calibre. To do this, please:

Start calibre in debug mode. Do this by starting calibre, then clicking on the down-arrow next to preferences and selecting Restart in debug mode.
Wait a few seconds. Don't do anything with calibre.
Attempt to make a "wireless device" connection from your nexus. I assume this will fail. If it does not, then don't bother with the rest. Instead, disconnect and try again.
Quit calibre. A window will open containing the debug text.
Post the debug test here.
Start calibre (again).
Go to Preferences -> Miscellaneous and press Debug device connection. Post the results here.

As a further test, please check content server connectivity.

On your windows machine running calibre, using a browser (internet explorer, firefox, etc) connect to 10.1.1.3:8080 assuming that your CS port is still 8080. You should see calibre's content server home page.
If you have another computer such as a laptop, try the same thing from that machine. It would be best if this machine is connected wirelessly.
Using chrome on your Nexus, attempt to connect to 10.1.1.3:8080. If it works, refresh the page a few times to be sure that it wasn't the "one off" success.
If the above works, then using chrome on your nexus attempt to connect to 10.1.1.3:9090. It it works then it will sit and spin for around a minute and finally show some text containing things like "pubdateFormat", "timestampFormat", and a lot of other stuff.

If the first doesn't work, then there is something on your windows machine blocking internal network connections. CC will never work reliably in this case.

If the second doesn't work reliably then there is a problem at the edge of your windows machine preventing incoming network connections. This will almost certainly be a firewall, anti-virus, or over-aggressive network security program on your PC.

If the second works reliably but the third doesn't, then the problem is somewhere on your network between your nexus and your PC. What that might be depends on the topology of the network.

If the third works but the fourth doesn't then the problem is probably on your windows machine, probably (again) a firewall, anti-virus, or over-aggressive network security program. In this case we will need to try a few more experiments.

If the last two above work reliably but CC does not, then we have a problem with CC. What that might be is a mystery, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it.

Answers to first 12 questions.

It is my HOME network. I have :
An old Belkin (F1PI241EGau) Internet Router providing (ADSL1) internet access and DHCP / DNS. The default IP is 10.1.1.1. I believe that more recent models have a more conventional 192.168.x.y address.
I have a DLink DSL 2730B Router Ethernet cable connected to the Belkin, providing 802.11n wireless connectivity.

2. What brand is your network router (the one that separates the internal network from the internet)?

As above

3. Does your windows machine have a fixed IP address? In other words, is it always 10.1.1.3?

Dynamic – but I have very few devices (phones, other computers, printer) connected (< 10) so the IP addresses are often “constant” for a specific device.

4. Is there more than one network router/switch between your nexus and your windows machine? If you are on a work network then this is very possible.

The Nexus and the PC both use the same wireless network (from the Dlink) but yes DHCP/DNS is managed by the Belkin.

5. Have you verified that calibre is allowed through the firewall on your windows machine (see the faq for instructions)?

I am using Norton Firewall. Calibre was set to “Auto”. I changed it to “Allow” (Didn’t make any difference)

6. Are you running any "network security suite" on your windows machine, such as McAfee or Norton?

Currently running Norton 360.

7. Is the windows machine managed by an IT group (a work machine)?

Managed by Me.

8. Are you running anything like a "virtual machine" such as Windows XP mode or virtualbox?

No.

No (Not on this machine, I do on another - but it isnt switched on at the moment).

I started the wireless on the internet router, and wirelessly connected both devices directly to the Internet router. That works !

If I try to connect to my normal Wireless Router (which is ethernet cable connected to the DHCP / DNS server) it doesnt work.

The bold line above says that calibre is listening on port 31581. That feels like a dynamic port, one that calibre allocates automatically. Your previous emails said that you were using 9090, and that this is what you put into CC.

Without changing any setting in calibre, change CC to "use defaults" for the IP address and port. Rerun the debug log experiment.

That sounds like either your dlink is buggy and not always forwarding packets, or that it is applying some security and deciding that two machines on wifi shouldn't talk to each other. I have never used that router so don't know what kinds of things it does.

Another possibility: the dlink might be forwarding all packets out the cable, expecting the device at the other end to send them back if necessary. I can see why they might choose to do this, as it saves a lot of traffic. It might also happen if the IP address of the dlink (the config address) is not in the 10 range. In this case it might not send incoming wireless packets back out, instead thinking that the packets should be sent only out the cable. Some network switches work this way, so it isn't impossible.

I have a netgear wireless hub attached by cable to my i'net router. It works with CC, so there is an existence proof that hub/router pairs can function. Unfortunately I can't say what you might need to do to make your config work reliably.

I have already tried both default and manually configured ports while connected through my "wireless" router - neither worked. I DO try to start with defaults !!

I am using currently using default ports connected directly (via wreless) to the internet router - that works.

After I have my Nexus setup, the transfer of books isnt something that I will do often (besides - there wont be any space left - it only has 32GB), so for the ad hoc usage connecting directly to my internet router works for me.

In terms of a long term solution to the problem, I dont have any plans to investigate what the Dlink might be doing.

I did make some changes with port forwarding on the Belkin (different problem, couple of years ago), but I have reset it since and cannot think of anything "significant" that would affect it (just usual stuff like SSID name, Security Key etc).

I am rather hoping to focus my time on reading the books ! I will have other issues like becoming familiar with CC, and playing seeing how I can maximise the value of the information I have in Calibre - e.g. capturing Dewey Subject information in CC (which I have already setup in Calibre in a hierarchichal fashion).

I do however really appreciate your assistance - so if you do want me to do some specific investigating - let me know and I am happy to oblige.

Thanks very much, but no need. We know that the problem is something strange with the router/hub pair, and that is good enough for me as long as it is good enough for you.

And I agree, it is nice to read something instead of debugging networking problems to be able to read.

Don't hesitate to ask if you need any pointers for using calibre metadata in CC. People on this forum have a lot of experience with different problems and different setups.

I believe that I have done everything that the Help has asked me to. I DID manage to get it to connect ONCE (and transferred two books). I disconnected, and then tried connecting again, same problem. I will see what happens after another couple of hours. (1) With default ports. Note - After several hours have retried. Thanks for being willing to take some more time to help work out what is going on. Starting at the beginning with things that we know can cause problems: IP addresses in the 10 range are a bit rare. Are you on a home network? What else is on the network? What brand is your network router (the one that separates the internal network from the internet)? Does your windows machine have a fixed IP address? In other words, is it always 10.1.1.3? Is there more than one network router/switch between your nexus and your windows machine? If you are on a work network then this is very possible. Have you verified that calibre is allowed through the firewall on your windows machine (see the faq for instructions)? Are you running any "network security suite" on your windows machine, such as McAfee or Norton? Is the windows machine managed by an IT group (a work machine)? Are you running anything like a "virtual machine" such as Windows XP mode or virtualbox? Do you have a VPN installed? These are usually installed to connect securely to work networks. Does your windows machine have any other network interfaces? To check this, open a command box (Start, type cmd into the "Run" box, press return. When the command box opens, type "ipconfig /all". You will see something similar to what is under the spoiler. Look to see if more than one adapter has an IP address. Do you have any other devices plugged into the windows machine, perhaps only for charging? It would be very useful to get some debug information from calibre. To do this, please: Start calibre in debug mode. Do this by starting calibre, then clicking on the down-arrow next to preferences and selecting Restart in debug mode. Wait a few seconds. Don't do anything with calibre. Attempt to make a "wireless device" connection from your nexus. I assume this will fail. If it does not, then don't bother with the rest. Instead, disconnect and try again. Quit calibre. A window will open containing the debug text. Post the debug test here. Start calibre (again). Go to Preferences -> Miscellaneous and press Debug device connection. Post the results here. As a further test, please check content server connectivity. On your windows machine running calibre, using a browser (internet explorer, firefox, etc) connect to 10.1.1.3:8080 assuming that your CS port is still 8080. You should see calibre's content server home page. If you have another computer such as a laptop, try the same thing from that machine. It would be best if this machine is connected wirelessly. Using chrome on your Nexus, attempt to connect to 10.1.1.3:8080. If it works, refresh the page a few times to be sure that it wasn't the "one off" success. If the above works, then using chrome on your nexus attempt to connect to 10.1.1.3:9090. It it works then it will sit and spin for around a minute and finally show some text containing things like "pubdateFormat", "timestampFormat", and a lot of other stuff. If the first doesn't work, then there is something on your windows machine blocking internal network connections. CC will never work reliably in this case. If the second doesn't work reliably then there is a problem at the edge of your windows machine preventing incoming network connections. This will almost certainly be a firewall, anti-virus, or over-aggressive network security program on your PC. If the second works reliably but the third doesn't, then the problem is somewhere on your network between your nexus and your PC. What that might be depends on the topology of the network. If the third works but the fourth doesn't then the problem is probably on your windows machine, probably (again) a firewall, anti-virus, or over-aggressive network security program. In this case we will need to try a few more experiments. If the last two above work reliably but CC does not, then we have a problem with CC. What that might be is a mystery, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it.

What else is on the network? It is my HOME network. I have : An old Belkin (F1PI241EGau) Internet Router providing (ADSL1) internet access and DHCP / DNS. The default IP is 10.1.1.1. I believe that more recent models have a more conventional 192.168.x.y address. I have a DLink DSL 2730B Router Ethernet cable connected to the Belkin, providing 802.11n wireless connectivity. 2. What brand is your network router (the one that separates the internal network from the internet)? As above 3. Does your windows machine have a fixed IP address? In other words, is it always 10.1.1.3? Dynamic – but I have very few devices (phones, other computers, printer) connected (< 10) so the IP addresses are often “constant” for a specific device. 4. Is there more than one network router/switch between your nexus and your windows machine? If you are on a work network then this is very possible. The Nexus and the PC both use the same wireless network (from the Dlink) but yes DHCP/DNS is managed by the Belkin. 5. Have you verified that calibre is allowed through the firewall on your windows machine (see the faq for instructions)? I am using Norton Firewall. Calibre was set to “Auto”. I changed it to “Allow” (Didn’t make any difference) 6. Are you running any "network security suite" on your windows machine, such as McAfee or Norton? Currently running Norton 360. 7. Is the windows machine managed by an IT group (a work machine)? Managed by Me. 8. Are you running anything like a "virtual machine" such as Windows XP mode or virtualbox? No. 9. That works ! If I try to connect to my normal Wireless Router (which is ethernet cable connected to the DHCP / DNS server) it doesnt work.

Glottalpoly Enthusiast Posts: 33 Karma: 490232 Join Date: Nov 2012 Device: Nexus 7	After I have my Nexus setup, the transfer of books isnt something that I will do often (besides - there wont be any space left - it only has 32GB), so for the ad hoc usage connecting directly to my internet router works for me. In terms of a long term solution to the problem, I dont have any plans to investigate what the Dlink might be doing. I did make some changes with port forwarding on the Belkin (different problem, couple of years ago), but I have reset it since and cannot think of anything "significant" that would affect it (just usual stuff like SSID name, Security Key etc). I am rather hoping to focus my time on reading the books ! I will have other issues like becoming familiar with CC, and playing seeing how I can maximise the value of the information I have in Calibre - e.g. capturing Dewey Subject information in CC (which I have already setup in Calibre in a hierarchichal fashion). I do however really appreciate your assistance - so if you do want me to do some specific investigating - let me know and I am happy to oblige.
