Swain, E. G.: The Stoneground Ghost Tales. v1. 22 Jun 2018

The Stoneground Ghost Tales by Edmund Gill Swain (1861–1938)

Welcome to Stoneground, a small village on the edge of The Fens in eastern England, home to an ancient church. The vicar of the parish, the Reverend Roland Batchel, is an amateur antiquarian who has more than one ghostly encounter, but never loses his equanimity. Although written in emulation of the style of M. R. James, the mood is eerie, rather than horrific; and garnished with humor enough to brighten the dark corners.

**************
Edmund Gill Swain (1861 – 29 January 1938) was an English cleric and author. As a chaplain of King's College, Cambridge, he was a colleague and good friend of the scholar and author M. R. James.

A number of James' acquaintances later published ghost stories in the Jamesian style, notably E. F. Benson and his brother A. C. Benson, and R. H. Malden. Swain and Malden have been described as the first two important imitators of James.
