A World of Curiosities is the most recent (2022) in Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series, which just keeps winning/being nominated for awards. (Per SYKM, this one won the 2022 Agatha Award for Best Contemporary Novel, and also was a finalist for a couple of others.) It's £0.99 in the UK right now.

Kobo UK: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/a-w...-curiosities-3

Spoiler:
Quote:
It's spring and Three Pines is re-emerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should return.

But something has.

As the villagers prepare for a special celebration, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir find themselves increasingly worried. A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators' lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they've arrived in the village of Three Pines.

But to what end?

Gamache and Beauvoir's memories of that tragic case, the one that first brought them together, come rushing back. Did their mother's murder hurt them beyond repair? Have those terrible wounds, buried for decades, festered and are now about to erupt?

As Chief Inspector Gamache works to uncover answers, his alarm grows when a letter written by a long dead stone mason is discovered. In it the man describes his terror when bricking up an attic room somewhere in the village. Every word of the 150-year-old letter is filled with dread. When the room is found, the villagers decide to open it up.

As the bricks are removed, Gamache, Beauvoir and the villagers discover a world of curiosities. But the head of homicide soon realizes there's more in that room than meets the eye. There are puzzles within puzzles, and hidden messages warning of mayhem and revenge.

In unsealing that room, an old enemy is released into their world. Into their lives. And into the very heart of Armand Gamache's home.

The Bone Track is the third in the Alexa Glock series by Sara E. Johnson. I had an ARC of this a while back and really really liked the forensics, and also the setting, although I found some of the personal relationships a bit angsty for my own taste. I had no idea about New Zealand's "Great Walks", and now I want to visit and go hiking, although perhaps on some trails a bit less structured than the Milford Track . The Bone Track is on sale right now for $1.99 in the US (discountable at Kobo) and £1.63 at Kindle UK.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B096LB298Q
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-bone-track
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B096LB298Q

Spoiler:
Quote:
A nature trek turns dangerous when the wilderness gives up its bones...

New Zealand's remote Milford Track seems the perfect place for forensic investigator Alexa Glock to reconnect with her brother Charlie, with whom she hasn't spent much time since they were kids. Their backpacking trip seems ill-fated from the start, though, when she must stop on the way to examine nine skeletons—most likely M?ori tribespeople—whose graves have been unearthed by highway construction. Before she opens the first casket, a M?ori elder gives her a dire warning: "The viewing of bones can unleash misfortune to the living. Or worse."

Though Alexa dismisses his words as superstitious, they soon come back to haunt her as the idyllic hike takes a sinister turn. First, Charlie is aloof and resentful of the time Alexa has spent at work. Then a rock avalanche nearly carries her away as it reveals the skeletal remains of someone who has clearly been stabbed to death. When a fellow hiker goes missing and is later found dead, Alexa has all she can do to focus on the science as she investigates two murders, while trying not to become the third victim.

Jigsaw is about halfway through Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series. It's on sale right now at Kindle US for $0.99.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005WZZRB0

Spoiler:
Quote:
Detectives Brown and Carella answer a call to a double homicide. One guy broke in and another defended himself and now they both are dead. The case seems open and shut. Except for one piece of evidence: a torn picture in one of the dead men’s hands. When insurance investigator Irving Krutch turns up at the squadroom with another piece of the photograph, Brown and Carella realize their tidy little case isn’t so tidy after all. In fact it leads back to a six-year-old bank robbery that left the four robbers dead and $750,000 missing. Now they must search for the next missing piece of the picture…

A fascinating, intense crime thriller, Jigsaw is bestselling author Ed McBain at his finest. With relentless pace and genius plotting, this installment of the 87th Precinct series weaves an unforgettable tale of greed and murder.

Some books in the The Kyoichiro Kaga series by Keigo Higashino are $3 each in the US (Kobo, Amazon)

Note that 4 books are available in English translation, but they aren't in direct sequence of the originals.
The translated novels are #4, #8, #9, #10.
Reviews suggest you don't have to start with the first English-translated book, which isn't on sale.

These were on my radar thanks to critic and author Gautam Bhatia, who has this to say about one the discounted novels:
Quote:
A Death in Tokyo is the latest translation of Higashino’s work, and it has all the hallmarks that make his crime fiction so compelling: a focus on human psychology, tragic choices, and of course, the slowwww unraveling. This one is slightly different from his other work in that it is a genuine whodunit - the reveal comes as an actual surprise - but that only adds to the suspense. And as with other Higashinos, there are moments that move you to tears - something rare with hard-nosed crime fiction such as this.

Too Good to Hang is the eleventh and most recent in Sarah Hawkswood's Bradecote/Catchpoll series. It's on sale right now for £1.89 at Kindle UK.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BN2S5MRY

Spoiler:
Quote:
April, 1145. Thorgar the Ploughman is found by the bloodied body of Father Edmund, a village priest in Ripple, and is summarily hanged for being caught at the scene of the crime, despite his pleas of innocence.

When his sister goes to Worcester to seek justice for Thorgar, the lord Sheriff sends Hugh Bradecote, with Serjeant Catchpoll and Underserjeant Walkelin, to discover the truth. They soon expose strong motives for placing the blame on the ploughman's shoulders, some unpleasant secrets festering among the villagers, and the whisper of a treasure long lost and now rediscovered.

The noose casts a long shadow, but the Sherrif's men will need to plumb the darkness to uncover the true killer.

Frequently on sale, but I haven't posted it:
Invisible Blood edited by Maxim Jakubowski is $2 in the US and "worldwide" (Kobo US, Kobo WW, Amazon)
This is an anthology of original stories of "murder and mystery".
Quote:
Open the files on an anthology of seventeen new crime stories to probe the brutal and complex hearts of criminals, and unravel the strangest of mysteries. Watch as a secretive group of intelligence community officers trace Jack Reacher through Heathrow in Lee Child's "Smile". In Mary Hoffman's "Fallen Woman", a journalist on the trail of a secretive drug lord gets caught up in the violent suicide of a young woman in Siena. And in Jeffery Deaver's "Connecting the Dots", detectives follow the trail of clues in the brutal killing of a homeless man, wherever it may lead... Invisible Blood is a gripping collection exploring the compulsions of the criminal mind.
