Twain, Mark: The American Claimant. (Illustrated) v3 21 Dec 2008
Mark Twain (real name Samuel Langhorne Clemens) (1835-1910) is probably one of the most known American writers. He was immensely popular in his time, especially noted for his wit and humour, and he is still widely quoted nowadays.
"The American Claimant" (1892) is maybe a minor work of Mark Twain's, illustrated by Dan Beard. A family of Americans descended from an eldest son of a British Earl, Lord Rossmore, has been claiming the title for many generations. The actual young Earl, filled with idealism, decides to abdicate, to change places with the American claimant. He travels to the US with the intention of contacting Colonel Mulberry Sellers, the claimant, to exchange places. Sellers is an American dreamer, always down on his luck, an inventor, a philanthropist of sorts. This version is based on the PG text, but with extensive corrections. Through proofreading and comparison the scans available in archive.org, I restored the missing italics, corrected dashes and hyphens, corrected also minor typos or inconsistencies in the original text... and of course included a hyperlinked TOC, formatted it, etc. The 26 illustrations are re-extracted from the scans and included where appropriate. Any kind of feedback is welcome. EDIT: Added a version with smaller (in filesize) images (*_SmIm.mobi), to comply with mobipocket limitations/specifications. The "large images" version works fine in the Cybook and in the Mobipocket Desktop Reader. PS. There was already a version of this book uploaded, that's why I start with v2. EDIT (v3): Added a note about the source and a couple of minor fixes. Thank you for your trouble on this. I know how time consuming it is to check the text against scans.
There is one technical problem that will affect some Mobipocket readers. Illustrations in Mobipocket format books are required to be less than 63KiB in length. You have several that are over this limit, including the cover image. regards, Paul Quote:

That's interesting - when I first got my CyBook, it wouldn't display cover images bigger than 63KiB. I've just checked, and somewhere along the line they've fixed this to work with larger images. ( I noticed the cover size because my QuickLook plug-in requires <= 63KiB, so I didn't see a cover image on the file.)
I think it is still a problem for people using the PalmOS version of the Mobipocket Reader. It's also currently the limit used in books generated using the Mobipocket Creator program. See http://www.mobipocket.com/dev/articl...ile=images.htm regards, Paul |
