What a poor selection this month, at least for me.

Easy choice this month: Lies That Bind Us is the only one that I find even remotely interesting, even though I'm getting little tired of books that feature women being held prisoner and/or not knowing how they came to be in some dire situation.

This month? For me, Meh! Besides, I've never understood the difference between a "thriller" and 'suspense".

I'm getting Matchmaking for Beginners out of this bunch. I'd read another book by the author and enjoyed it so this isn't the usual pig in a poke.

I also chose Matchmaking for Beginners; it was really the only choice for me.

I also went with that one. I can't really take credit for the reminder, it's on this month's Kindle First Reads page at the bottom so I saw it there. I might leave it in the post at the bottom from now on though, so new people discover it.

I might try Matchmaking For Beginners. Not what I would usually go for, but it looks cute I guess and nothing else interests me at all.

I finished , The Air Raid Killer, by Frank Goldammer, from April's selection. Although I didn't get that book as a freebie, it's worth the $4.99 price I did buy it for. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series coming out soon. It is the back ground story of Germany 1944\45 that really sets it apart from other detective stories I've read in this genre.

June Amazon First Reads
The Thinnest Air (Minka Kent) A woman’s disappearance exposes a life of secrets in a twisting novel of psychological suspense from the author of The Memory Watcher. Meredith Price is the luckiest woman alive. Her husband, Andrew, is a charming and successful financial broker. She has two lovely stepchildren and is living in affluence in a mountain resort town. After three years of marriage, Meredith’s life has become predictable. Until the day she disappears. Her car has been discovered in a grocery store parking lot—purse and phone undisturbed on the passenger seat, keys in the ignition, no sign of struggle, and no evidence of foul play. It’s as if she vanished into thin air. It’s not like Meredith to simply abandon her loved ones. And no one in this town would have reason to harm her. When her desperate sister, Greer, arrives, she must face a disturbing question: What if no one really knows Meredith at all? For Greer, finding her sister isn’t going to be easy…because where she’s looking is going to get very, very dark. A Home for Leo (Vin Vogel) Leo grew up in the sea. He has a family of sea lions he loves. He’s happy, but he has always known he was different. Then Leo’s suddenly reunited with his human parents, and he finds he loves them too. But he still feels like a fish out of water. Being from two worlds and having two families isn’t so easy. Leo has a lot to figure out… Splashed with humor and grounded in heart, this brightly illustrated story explores ideas of family, home, and belonging in a way that’s as relatable as it is unique. Takeoff (Joseph Reid) High-octane action, celebrity glamour, and endless possibilities for danger meet in this fast-paced debut for fans of John Sandford and Lee Child. Still reeling from a devastating personal tragedy, air marshal turned investigator Seth Walker embarks on his first case. All he has to do is accompany female pop star Max Magic to Los Angeles and deliver her to the FBI. But when their routine flight ends in a hail of gunfire at LAX, Walker has no choice but to take the frightened diva on the run. After a second attack leaves him battered and bloody, Walker realizes he cannot trust the FBI. To keep his client alive, he must use a patchwork of trusted aviation contacts to get her home to Austin, where the key suspects await. But as they race to stay one step ahead of their deadly pursuers, the biggest danger of all may be what they’re heading toward—the dark secrets that Max herself has been keeping… To the Bridge: A True Story of Motherhood and Murder (Nancy Rommelmann) On May 23, 2009, Amanda Stott-Smith drove to the middle of the Sellwood Bridge in Portland, Oregon, and dropped her two children into the Willamette River. Forty minutes later, rescuers found the body of four-year-old Eldon. Miraculously, his seven-year-old sister, Trinity, was saved. As the public cried out for blood, Amanda was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to thirty-five years in prison. Embarking on a seven-year quest for the truth, Rommelmann traced the roots of Amanda’s fury and desperation through thousands of pages of records, withheld documents, meetings with lawyers and convicts, and interviews with friends and family who felt shocked, confused, and emotionally swindled by a woman whose entire life was now defined by an unspeakable crime. At the heart of that crime: a tempestuous marriage, a family on the fast track to self-destruction, and a myriad of secrets and lies as dark and turbulent as the Willamette River. Without a Country (Ayse Kulin) From the international bestselling author of Last Train to Istanbul comes a novel based on true events that explores the depths of pride, devotion, and persistence as four generations of a family struggle to forge their destinies. As Hitler’s reign of terror begins to loom large over Germany, Gerhard and Elsa Schliemann—like other German Jews—must flee with their children in search of sanctuary. But life elsewhere in Europe offers few opportunities for medical professor Gerhard and his fellow scientists. Then they discover an unexpected haven in Turkey, where universities and hospitals welcome them as valuable assets. But despite embracing their adopted land, personal and political troubles persist. Military coups bring unrest and uncertainty to the country, intermarriage challenges the cultural identity of Gerhard and Elsa’s descendants, and anti-Semitism once again threatens their future in the place they call home. From World War II to the age of social media, one family’s generations find their way through love and loss, sacrifice and salvation, tragedy and triumph—with knowledge hard won and passion heartfelt. The Things We Don't Say: A Novel (Ella Carey) A beguiling painting holds the secrets of a woman’s past and calls into question everything she thought she knew about the man she loved… Nearly sixty years ago, renowned London artist Patrick Adams painted his most famous work: a portrait of his beloved Emma Temple, a fellow bohemian with whom he shared his life. Years after Patrick’s death, ninety-year-old Emma still has the painting hanging over her bed at their country home as a testament to their love. To Emma’s granddaughter, Laura, the portrait is also a symbol of so much to come. The masterpiece is serving as collateral to pay Laura’s tuition at a prestigious music school. Then the impossible happens when an appraiser claims the painting is a fraud. For Laura, the accusation jeopardizes her future. For Emma, it casts doubt on everything she believed about her relationship with Patrick. Laura is determined to prove that Patrick did indeed paint the portrait. Both her grandmother’s and Patrick’s legacies are worth fighting for. As the stories of two women entwine, it’s time for Emma to summon up the past—even at the risk of revealing its unspoken secrets. |

It's an easy choice for me: Minka Kent's The Thinnest Air. This was already on my radar, because I read one of her earlier books, The Memory Watcher. It was Lifetime-movie-type suspense, just enjoyably mindless entertainment to while away a few hours.
